1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup chopped pecans
1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ devil's food cake mix
Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease or spray bottom only of 13x9-inch pan. Mix chocolate chips, brown sugar and pecans; set aside.
  • Bake and cool cake as directed on box for 13x9-inch pan--except sprinkle chocolate chip mixture on batter in pan before baking.
  • Store tightly covered.

1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 1/4 cups (packed) golden brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup salted roasted peanuts, divided
1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate chips (about 3 ounces), divided

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour 8x8x2- inch metal baking pan. Whisk 1 cup flour, salt, and baking soda in medium bowl to blend. Melt 1/2 cup butter in heavy large saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat; add sugar and whisk until smooth. Cool mixture 2 minutes; whisk in eggs and vanilla. Using flexible spatula, stir in flour mixture, then half of peanuts and half of chocolate chips. Spread batter in prepared pan; sprinkle with remaining peanuts and chocolate chips.
  • Bake blondies until golden, tester inserted into center comes out clean, and edges just begin to pull away from sides of pan, about 30 minutes; cool completely in pan on rack. DO AHEAD: Can be made 2 days ahead. Cover tightly and store at room temperature.
  • Cut blondies into 16 squares; serve.

Honey and brown sugar lend a touch of sweetness, while egg whites (left over from Orange Pistachio Crescents), nuts, and seeds give the bars protein and chewiness.

1 1/2 cups sliced almonds (4 1/2 ounces)
1/3 cup sesame seeds
1/3 cup mild honey
3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 cups crisp rice cereal (preferably brown-rice)
1 cup roasted salted cashews (1/4 pound), coarsely chopped
2 large egg whites

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F with rack in middle. Lightly oil a 9-inch square baking pan, then line bottom and sides with parchment and lightly oil parchment.
  • Toast almonds in a 4-sided sheet pan until pale golden, 6 to 9 minutes. Stir in sesame seeds and bake until seeds are golden, 3 to 4 minutes more. Transfer to a plate and cool completely.
  • Reduce oven to 325°F.
  • Gently heat honey, brown sugar, and oil in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring, until smooth.
  • Stir together rice cereal, cashews, and almond-sesame mixture in a large bowl.
  • Beat egg whites with a rounded 1/4 teaspoon salt in a small bowl with a fork until foamy, 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Stir honey mixture into cereal mixture, then stir in whites.
  • Spread mixture in baking pan, pressing gently, and bake until golden brown, 35 to 40 minutes. Cool completely, then turn out onto a cutting board and cut into bars.

Steps:

  • Place dates and 1 teaspoon baking soda in a large bowl. Stir in boiling water; cool completely. , In another large bowl, cream shortening and 1 cup sugar. Beat in egg. Combine the flour, salt and remaining baking soda; add to creamed mixture alternately with date mixture., Pour into a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Sprinkle with remaining sugar; top with chocolate chips and nuts. , Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

  • In a microwave, melt chocolate; stir until smooth. Cool. In a large bowl, beat the egg, sugar, water and oil until well blended. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; gradually add to egg mixture until blended. Stir in melted chocolate. , Pour into a greased 8-in. square baking pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips. Bake at 350° for 32-38 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

1 (18 1/4 ounce) box devil's food cake mix
1 1/4 cups water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease bottom only of 13 x 9 inch pan with cooking spray.
  • In small bowl, mix chocolate chips, brown sugar and peans, set aside. Make cake mix as directed on box, using water, oil and eggs. Pour into pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chip mixture.
  • Bake 30 minutes or until a toothpic k inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Store tightly covered.
