QUICK AND ALMOST-PROFESSIONAL BUTTERCREAM ICING



Quick and Almost-Professional Buttercream Icing image

After failing to find the perfect recipe for buttercream icing, I found one that worked for me and then added my own two cents.

½ cup unsalted butter, softened
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
2 tablespoons milk
3 drops food coloring, or as needed

Steps:

  • Cream room temperature butter with a hand mixer, the paddle attachment of a stand mixer, or a wooden spoon until smooth and fluffy. Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar until fully incorporated. Beat in vanilla extract.
  • Pour in milk and beat for an additional 3 to 4 minutes. Add food coloring, if using, and beat for thirty seconds until smooth or until desired color is reached.

This Crisco frosting tastes like bakery frosting and can be used to decorate cakes and cookies.

1/2 cup Crisco
1 tablespoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup water (milk, or dairy-free milk substitute)

Steps:

  • Place the Crisco, vanilla, and salt in a medium bowl. Beat with a mixer on high speed until light and fluffy.
  • Switch the mixer to low speed and alternate adding the powdered sugar and the liquid until the ingredients are completely blended.
  • Beat on high speed until the frosting is smooth and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

This icing recipe is #1! It's quick and easy to make, bright white for cake decorating, and you can easily change it's consistency! This is the most important icing recipe you'll ever have. It's so basic, it makes the hassle of cake decorating so much easier! If you wish, use half shortening and half unsalted butter.

4 cups confectioners' sugar
1 cup shortening
2 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon clear imitation vanilla extract

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine sugar, shortening, water and vanilla. Beat on low speed to combine, then beat on medium speed for a full five minutes. It won't look like Icing at first, but keep the mixer going for a full five minutes, and then you're done!
  • Note: If you're not using this for decorating, but just for icing the cake, thin the icing by adding 3 tbs. of corn syrup, or water to the icing.

Number Of Ingredients 7

600g icing sugar, sifted
300g unsalted or salted butter, softened
finely grated lemon zest
finely grated orange zest
a dash of vanilla extract
few drops food colouring
cocoa powder, to taste

Steps:

  • Beat 600g sifted icing sugar and 300g butter together with your chosen flavouring and colouring if using, add 2-3 tablespoons of boiling water to loosen and beat until smooth.
  • Fill a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe onto cupcakes or smear in the middle and over the top of a 20cm cake using a palette knife.

4 ½ cups sifted confectioners' sugar
¼ cup milk
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

Steps:

  • In a bowl beat butter or margarine until fluffy. Gradually add 2 cups of the confectioners' sugar, beating well.
  • Slowly beat in the milk and vanilla. Slowly beat in remaining sugar. Beat in additional milk, if needed, to make of spreading consistency. Tint with food color, if desired.
