MY GRANDMA'S NATURAL REMEDY FOR CONSTIPATION (STEWED PRUNES)

My Grandma's Natural Remedy for Constipation (Stewed Prunes) image

My sweet grandma used stewed prunes as a natural laxative, but my mom likes to eat them as a simple and healthy dessert because slow simmering softens and thickens dried plums into a sweet syrupy goodness. Healthier than taking Ex-lax.

Categories     Breakfast

Time 31m

Yield 15 stewed prunes, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

15 pitted prunes (dried plums)
1 1/2 cups water
1 -2 tablespoon orange juice (optional)
milk, as desired (optional)

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, place prunes, water, and orange juice. Bring to boil, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Prunes will absorb most of the water, and the remaining water will thicken into a consistency of syrup. If there is a lot of liquid remaining, simmer, uncovered, for a few minutes until sauce reduces.
  • Transfer hot prunes and syrup to a bowl. Pour cold milk over the prunes to cover. Eat with a spoon.
  • HINT: This remedy should work within 24 hours and can be safely eaten as often and as long as needed.
  • NOTE: If you do not have constipation and just like the taste of stewed prunes, you may add 1/8 teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the prunes mixture before cooking (Cinnamon, oranges, and prunes pair well together.) However, do not add the cinnamon if you are using this for constipation because cinnamon is used as a natural cure for diarrhea and will have the opposite effect of a laxative.
  • One cup prunes contains 1274 mg of potassium, which prevents muscle cramps, and 12 grams of fiber to relieve constipation.

STEWED PRUNES

Stewed Prunes image

I have eaten prunes this way as long as I can remember in my family. My grandmother made stewed prunes this way, my mother did, and I do too. Simple and delicious and taste so nice. Enjoy on their own, or on your breakfast cereal, or with ice cream, or mixed with other fruit.

Time 20m

Yield 4-6 cups, 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

500 g dried prunes
3 cups hot water
1/4-1/3 cup white sugar

Steps:

  • Combine all the ingredients into a medium saucepan. Cover. Bring to the boil, give a stir or 2 and then turn the heat down and simmer covered for 15 minutes. At the end of the 15 minute cooking time turn the heat off and leave on the stove for 10 minutes. Pour into a dish large enough to contain the contents of the saucepan. Cool. When cool, cover (so nothing in the fridge falls into or spills into the dish), and put in the fridge. Eat!

MY GRANDMA'S NATURAL REMEDIES FOR DIARRHEA

My Grandma's Natural Remedies for Diarrhea image

My sweet grandma gave Nutmeg Tea to my mother when she was ill as a little girl, and it safely did the trick. Healthier than taking Imodium. Use for acute diarrhea caused by a virus, cold, flu, or mild food poisoning. Not intended to treat chronic diarrhea.

Time 16m

Yield 3 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 -3 banana, peels discarded
1 pint whole blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (DO NOT USE if pregnant or breastfeeding. DO NOT GIVE to children three years old and under.)
8 ounces water
honey, to taste (optional, added only for taste because drink is bitter)

Steps:

  • BANANA REMEDY: On the first day of treatment, eat 1 to 3 bananas. Then, eat 1 to 2 bananas each following day for as long as needed for up to 10 days. If diarrhea persists after 10 days of treatment, see a health care provider.
  • BLUEBERRY REMEDY: On the first day of treatment, eat 1 pint (12 ounce package) of blueberries in one sitting. Then, eat 1/2 pint (6 ounce package) of blueberries in one sitting each following day for as long as needed for up to 10 days. If diarrhea persists after 10 days of treatment, see a health care provider. Note: A one pint (12 ounce package) of blueberries equals about 2 1/2 cups in a measuring cup.
  • NUTMEG TEA REMEDY: Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not give to toddlers or infants. DO NOT CONSUME MORE THAN 8 OUNCES OF NUTMEG TEA OR 1/2 TEASPOON NUTMEG PER 12 HOURS. On the first day of treatment, put a level 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg into a mug. Heat water to boiling and pour into mug. Cover top of mug with a saucer to keep therapeutic oils from evaporating. Steep for 15 minutes or longer. Stir in honey if using. Stir before drinking to incorporate nutmeg granules. Ground nutmeg will sink to bottom of mug so use a spoon to eat all the nutmeg granules after drinking the tea. Another 8 ounces of nutmeg tea can be consumed 12 hours later. Then, drink 8 ounces of nutmeg tea each following day for as long as needed for up to 10 days. If diarrhea persists after 10 days of treatment, see a health care provider. • NUTMEG TEA REMEDY FOR CHILDREN: The recommended amount of Nutmeg Tea Remedy is for adults. For children, use a level 1/8 teaspoon of nutmeg in 8 ounces of hot water per day. CHILDREN ARE NOT TO CONSUME MORE THAN 1/8 TEASPOON TOTAL OF NUTMEG PER DAY. DO NOT GIVE TO CHILDREN THREE YEARS OLD AND UNDER.

Nutmeg Tea Remedy usually works with 30 minutes and lasts for 24 hours. You can use all three remedies per day or use only one remedy per day.
  • EXAMPLE #1: For breakfast, I will drink 1 cup of nutmeg tea and eat 1 pint blueberries.
  • EXAMPLE #2: For breakfast, I will drink 1 cup of nutmeg tea and eat 1 banana.
  • Bananas are high in potassium, one of the most important electrolytes that is deplenished by diarrhea. Blueberry skins are high in antioxidants and fiber and contain anti-inflammatory and antiviral compounds that fight infections and boosts the immune system. SIMPLE STEWED PRUNES

Simple Stewed Prunes image

This recipe is so simple I hate to post it however there isn't one on Recipezaar even close so here goes. I have posted 1 cup of water however if your prunes are large you want to have the water at least 1/4" above the prunes. I don't use sugar but it may be added.

These are sooo delicious and very economical during hard times. Great served warm for breakfast or as a light dessert. Don't be scared of prunes...they're just dried plums! They're my favorite dried fruit and very healthy.
