VIETNAMESE PORK AND FIVE SPICE

Vietnamese Pork and Five Spice image

The entire house will be filled with a spicy aroma that will make your mouth water. I normally serve this over jasmine rice with sesame seeds sprinkled on top, along with a side dish of steamed kale and garlic or stir-fried green beans with garlic and mushrooms.

Provided by Asian Caucasian

Categories     Dinner

Time 1h45m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 12

1/2 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup rice vinegar
2 teaspoons fresh ginger, minced
3 cloves garlic, crushed
2 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 ½ teaspoons light brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons sesame oil
4 green onions, sliced and divided
1 teaspoon corn starch
1 (1.25 lb.) pork tenderloin (trimmed of silver skin and fat)

Steps:

  • In a small mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, ginger, garlic, Chinese five spice, black pepper, red pepper flakes, sugar, and sesame oil. Whisk together well. Add in half of the green onions. Put half of the marinade in a small sauce pot and whisk in the corn starch.
  • Place the trimmed pork tenderloin in a ziplock baggie and pour in the remaining marinade. Massage the marinade into the pork and refrigerate for one hour or overnight.
  • When ready to cook, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Remove pork from the refrigerator and let it get to room temperature. Heat a heavy cast iron skillet or oven-proof pan on high until slightly smoking. Add the pork tenderloin to the pan and sear both sides, about 2 minutes.
  • Transfer the pan to the oven and cook for 20-25 minutes, until an internal temperature reads at least 145 degrees. Let the pork rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
  • Meanwhile, bring the reserved marinade to a roiling boil. Lower the heat to low and thicken sauce for 2 minutes. Pour the sauce over the pork. Sprinkle the pork with the remaining green onions.
  • Serve with a side of your favorite rice.

HOISIN FIVE-SPICE PORK CHOPS

Hoisin Five-Spice Pork Chops image

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     main-dish

Time 4h40m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 cup chopped fresh pineapple
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/3 cup Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
1/4 cup honey
3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
1 2-inch piece ginger, sliced into thin rounds
6 bone-in pork sirloin chops (1/2 inch thick; about 2 1/2 pounds total)
Vegetable oil, for brushing

Steps:

  • Pulse the pineapple, soy sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, rice wine, honey, hoisin sauce and five-spice powder in a blender or food processor until smooth. Transfer to a medium saucepan and add the ginger. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl and let cool. Add the pork chops, turning to coat; cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight.
  • Preheat a grill to medium high and lightly brush the grates with vegetable oil. Remove the pork chops from the marinade, letting the excess drip off; transfer to a baking sheet and let rest 15 minutes before grilling. Transfer the marinade to a saucepan.
  • Cook the marinade over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it boils and thickens slightly, about 7 minutes. (You can also do this in a cast-iron skillet on the grill.) Strain through a fine-mesh sieve and set aside.
  • Transfer the pork chops to the grill and cook until marked, about 6 minutes. Flip and continue grilling until cooked through, 3 to 4 more minutes. Remove the pork from the grill and let rest 5 minutes. Serve with the sauce.

5-SPICE PORK AND FRIED RICE

5-Spice Pork and Fried Rice image

The inspiration for this dish came from when I was attending college back at home in Ireland and I would always order a 5-spice chicken with noodles at a lunch spot in between classes. Ever since then I've just loved the sweet, spicy and earthy flavor of 5-spice; it also pairs beautifully with pork.

Provided by Stuart O'Keeffe

Categories     main-dish

Time 30m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 16

1/2 cup hoisin sauce
1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
1 teaspoon Chinese 5-spice powder
One 1-to-1 1/2-pound pork tenderloin
2 tablespoons sesame oil
2 large eggs, beaten
1 shallot, minced
2 cloves garlic, chopped
3 cups cooked white rice, cooled
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
1/2 cup frozen corn, thawed
1/2 cup frozen peas, thawed
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro, plus whole leaves for garnish
1 cup dry roasted cashew nuts or roasted peanuts, chopped

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, vinegar and 5-spice powder in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until the sugar dissolves, 2 to 3 minutes. Set aside and let cool.
  • Put the tenderloin on the prepared baking sheet. Brush all over with the sauce and roast in the oven until the internal temperature on an instant-read thermometer reaches 140 degrees F, 15 to 20 minutes. Slice 1/2-inch thick.
  • While the pork is roasting, heat 1 tablespoon of the sesame oil in a large nonstick skillet. Cook the eggs, stirring with a silicone spatula, until softly scrambled, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  • Add the remaining 1 tablespoon sesame oil to the same skillet. Add the shallots and garlic and cook, stirring, until translucent, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the rice and cook, stirring often, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the oyster sauce and cook, stirring often, about 2 minutes. Add the corn and peas and stir together. Add the soy sauce and the cooked eggs and cook, stirring often, until the corn and peas are warmed through, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat, stir in the chopped cilantro and set aside.
  • Spoon some fried rice in the center of each plate, top with 2 to 3 slices of pork, some of the nuts and cilantro leaves and serve.

5-SPICE PORK STIR FRY WITH MANDARIN ORANGES

5-Spice Pork Stir Fry with Mandarin Oranges image

Provided by Kelsey Nixon

Categories     main-dish

Time 2h20m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 27

4 cups peaches, peeled and sliced
1 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup ketchup
2/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons garlic, minced
2 tablespoons ginger, minced
One 2 1/2-pound boneless pork loin roast
Kosher salt and cracked black pepper
1/4 cup low-sodium chicken stock
2 cups white rice
3 tablespoons sesame oil
2 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder
1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup rice vinegar
3 tablespoons orange juice
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 cup trimmed snow peas
1 red onion, sliced
1 red bell pepper, sliced
1 tablespoon grated ginger
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup mandarin orange supremes
4 scallions, thinly sliced on the diagonal
Roasted peanuts, for serving
Mandarin oranges, for serving, optional

Steps:

  • For the pork and peach bbq sauce: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Combine the peaches, brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, soy sauce, garlic and ginger in a food processor or blender.
  • Pat the pork dry with paper towels and sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper. Reserve half (about 2 cups) of the peach BBQ sauce and set aside. Transfer the pork, fat-side up, to a rack over a heavy-bottomed roasting pan and brush the rest of the sauce all over the pork. Add the stock to the bottom of the roasting pan.
  • Roast the pork until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part reads 140 degrees F, about 1 hour. Transfer the pork to a baking sheet to rest for 10 minutes. Reserve 1 1/4 pounds for the stir fry, and reserve the rest for leftovers or another recipe.
  • Remove the rack from the roasting pan and place on the stove over medium-high heat. Whisk in the reserved BBQ sauce and scrape the bottom of the pan to incorporate the browned sauce. Cook until slightly reduced and thickened, about 10 minutes.
  • For the stir fry: Cook the rice according to the package directions.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of the sesame oil to a small saute pan and heat over medium heat until it begins to shimmer; turn off the heat, add the five-spice powder and cool to room temperature.
  • Meanwhile, whisk together the soy sauce, vinegar, orange juice, sugar and cornstarch in a small bowl.
  • Slice the pork into 1/4-inch rounds, then slice again to make 1/2-inch-wide strips. Place the pork in a medium bowl and season with the sesame oil and five-spice mixture.
  • Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon oil over high heat until very hot in a large skillet or wok. Add the peas, onions and bell peppers and stir-fry until the vegetables begin to soften, about 1 minute. Add the ginger and garlic and continue to stir-fry for an additional minute. Finally, add the sliced pork, the soy-vinegar mixture and scallions and continue to cook until the pork has warmed through, 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Cook until the sauce thickens, 1 to 2 minutes. Turn off the heat and give it a few more stirs. Serve over the rice and garnish with roasted peanuts and mandarin oranges, if desired.
