PEAR CRANBERRY SAUCE

Pear Cranberry Sauce image

We don't care for regular cranberry sauce, so I usually perk it up with other fruit. This pear version is the one my family requests most often. It's sweet, tangy and a beautiful ruby-red color. Since it keeps well in the refrigerator, I often make it in advance.

Provided by Taste of Home

Time 30m

Yield about 2 cups.

Number Of Ingredients 6

2-1/2 cups cubed peeled ripe pears (about 3 medium)
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 cinnamon stick (3 inches), broken in half
1 package (12 ounces) fresh or frozen cranberries
1 to 1-1/4 cups sugar

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, combine the pears, water, ginger and cinnamon. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Stir in cranberries and sugar. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 10-12 minutes or until the cranberries have popped and sauce is slightly thickened, stirring several items. , Discard cinnamon sticks. Mash sauce if desired. Cool. Cover and refrigerate until serving.

FAVORITE CRANBERRY APPLE PEAR SAUCE

Favorite Cranberry Apple Pear Sauce image

Cranberry apple pear sauce is the perfect side dish for Thanksgiving or Christmas. It's packed with saucy cranberries, apples, pears, and sweet raisins.

Provided by Emily Koch

Categories     Side

Time 55m

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 pounds fresh cranberries (8 cups)
3 cooking apples, peeled and chopped (I used granny smith)
2 firm pears, peeled and chopped
2 cups golden raisins
1 1/2 cups to 2 cups raw or granulated sugar (adjust according to how sweet/tart you like it. And keep in mind how sweet your orange liquor is)
2 oranges zested
1 cup fresh orange juice (about 3 oranges)
2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
pinch of salt
1/2 cup orange liquor, such as cointreau or grand mala*

Steps:

  • Add all of the ingredients except the orange liquor, to a large pot. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Allow the mixture to simmer for 35 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. You will know the cranberry sauce is done when most of the cranberries have popped and the sauce has reduced and become thick (see photo in post above).
  • With the heat off stir in the orange liquor. Taste and add more sugar if needed.
  • allow the sauce to mostly cool before transferring to airtight containers and storing in the fridge. Allow it to chill in the fridge for at least 4 hours (or overnight). This recipe is best made up to 2 days in advance so the flavors can really develop. You can make it up to 1 or 2 weeks in advance as it keeps for a long time in the fridge. Serve cold.

LIGHT CRANBERRY PEAR SAUCE

Light Cranberry Pear Sauce image

This is a light recipe from Martha Stewart which I have changed slightly. The addition of the cherries, pears and fruit juice adds natural sweetness which allows you to decrease the amount of sugar from the traditional cranberry sauce recipes. Sounds delish and I bet a pinch or two of ginger would be fabulous in here as well.

  • Rinse the cranberries and pick out and discard any damaged cranberries. Then, peel and core the pear. Diced it to your desired size. I like mine to be a little bit big.
  • In a medium saucepan place the cranberries, pears, orange juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Then add the sugar and stir to combine. Place on the stove over high heat and bring to a boil about 5 to 7 minutes. Then add a pinch of salt to balance the flavors. Lower the heat and simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes until must of the cranberries burst. This is when you start hearing the popping sound.
  • Remove the pot from the stove. Let the sauce cool completely, then transfer to a container with a sealed lid. If you notice the sauce is not thick enough, no worries, the cranberry sauce will continue thickening as it cools in the refrigerator.
