Steps:
- Peel the oranges, taking care to remove all the white pith. Slice the oranges over a bowl or storage container so that you catch any juice, and add the slices to the bowl. Circular slices look prettiest, hold together best, and are easiest.
- Add the pineapple and coconut to the orange slices and gently toss. The ambrosia can be refrigerated up to two days, covered.
- When ready to serve, slice the banana and toss it with other fruits. Add the cherries last.
- Serve the ambrosia in your prettiest glass bowl. It will become a tradition.
OLD SOUTH AMBROSIA
Steps:
- Grate coconut in bowl. Add peeled and sectioned oranges; discard membrane and seeds. Add pineapple, fruit cocktail, apples, bananas, and nuts. Sweeten with sugar, being careful not to add too much as the syrup from the fruit is usually sufficient. Chill before serving. This dessert is pretty garnished with cherries and served in a crystal bowl.

7 CLASSIC AMERICAN FOODS EVERYONE LOVED - EAT THIS NOT THAT
From eatthis.com

- Sloppy Joes. Sloppy Joes are said to have originated at a restaurant in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930s as "loose meat sandwiches." They're essentially ground beef or pork seasoned with a sweet-tangy tomato sauce and served on a simple hamburger bun.
- Turkey Tetrazzini. This pasta dish is mostly known as a way to use up a surplus of leftover turkey at Thanksgiving. It's cooked like a casserole with pasta (typically spaghetti or egg noodles), mushrooms, peas, a creamy sauce, and a breadcrumb topping.
- Ambrosia Salad. A Southern potluck and holiday favorite, this "salad" (which was first invented in the 1800s) is a cloyingly sweet dessert-like gloopy mess.
- Creamed Chipped Beef. Creamed chipped beef is thin-sliced dried beef that is slightly reconstituted in a thick milk-based gravy. Veterans who ate it in the armed forces would call it "shit on a shingle" or "S.O.S.," and it was a popular cheap breakfast meal served over toast, even after the depression era was over.
- Chicken Cordon Bleu. Though it has a French name, this is more of an American classic: Swiss cheese and ham wrapped inside a chicken breast that is breaded and deep-fried.
- Tuna Noodle Casserole. Another classic casserole uses canned tuna, egg noodles, a creamy sauce (sometimes with cheese), breadcrumbs, and a very minimal amount of vegetables such as peas, carrots, and corn.
- Rice and Tapioca Pudding. Both of these desserts were popular as instant and homemade versions throughout the 1900s, thickened with rice or tapioca pearls.

- OPEN and DRAIN the cans of fruit. No need to rinse, but you do need to drain. If you have time, drain the fruit in a strainer for 30 minutes.
- REMOVE the maraschino cherry stems if they are still attached. CUT the cherries in half. Reserve a few whole cherries to place on top of the salad.
- WHIP the heavy cream. Pour the heavy cream into a cold bowl and whip using a hand mixer with a wire whip attachment for 4 to 5 minutes, or until the cream is whipped to soft to medium peaks.
