Steps:

  • Remove wide strips of zest from 2 lemons with a vegetable peeler (do not remove the pith). Make 2 cups simple syrup (recipe below), adding the lemon zest before heating. Let cool, then pour into an ice-filled pitcher. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 cups each fresh lemon juice and water, and some lemon slices.
  • Simple Syrup: To make 2 cups simple syrup, bring 1 1/2cups each sugar and water to a boil, stirring until dissolved. Let cool.

1 1/2 cups sugar
3 cinnamon sticks
3 star anise pods
One 3-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
6 cups seltzer, chilled
1 1/2 cups lemon juice (from 6 to 8 lemons)

Steps:

  • Combine the sugar, cinnamon sticks, star anise pods, ginger and 1 1/2 cups water in a small pot. Bring to a boil, remove from the heat and let sit to cool to room temperature. Strain.
  • Combine the strained simple syrup, cold seltzer and lemon juice in a large pitcher. Stir and pour into glasses filled with ice.

This is quick and easy. I like this kind of drink better with fresh squeezed lemon, boiling water, sugar, etc. but this is the next best thing.

1 (12 ounce) can lemonade (the soft drink type that's sold in 12 packs, NOT frozen concentrate)
1 fluid ounce whiskey (I use Canadian Club or Maker's Mark)
1 cinnamon stick (optional)

Steps:

  • Pour lemonade into a large microwave safe mug.
  • Heat on high about 2 minutes until hot.
  • Add whisky and stir with cinnamon stick if desired.
