- Strawberry. The modern strawberry is a man-made hybrid of the smaller wild strawberry, which has a shorter shelf life as well as a better flavor and aroma.
- Carrots. Carrots haven’t always been orange. Natural carrots were either white or purple and probably inedible. There are even accounts that white carrots were eaten in the Roman Empire, but historians believe that they could have been parsnips, white carrots, or both.
- Tangelo. As we mentioned earlier, the tangelo is a man-made hybrid of the tangerine and the pomelo. In fact, that’s where the tangelo got its name. However, it is common for people to confuse the tangelo with the tangerine, mandarin, and orange.
- Boysenberry. History of Knott’s Berry Farm and the Boysenberry. The boysenberry was created by Rudolph Boysen of Orange County, California in 1923. Boysen, a horticulturist, planted grafted berry vines on his in-law’s farm in Anaheim, eventually cultivating a successful hybrid.
- Grapefruit. The grapefruit is a relatively new hybrid. It’s believed, although not confirmed that the grapefruit first appeared around 1693 when Captain Shaddock transported pomelo (Citrus maxima) seeds to the West Indies and planted them close to some orange trees.

- Broccoli. Broccoli is a member of the Brassica family (cabbage), originating specifically the Brassica oleracea. Other family members include cabbage, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts, collard greens, and others.
- Cauliflower. Similar to broccoli, cauliflower was selectively bred from cabbage, the Brassica oleracea. Cauliflower and broccoli tops come from cabbage that were bred their tops.
- Corn. The corn we know today is a hybrid, but the actual ancestors and origins are unknown. Some experts believe that corn existed before the current crop of corn varieties were developed.
- Bananas. Bananas originate from a cross between the Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. By themselves, they weren’t that edible. One was hard to eat because it had too many seeds, even though it was sweet.
- Carrots. Carrots were originally found in the Middle East (Afghanistan and Iran) and Central Asia. The bright orange carrots we see today are actually quite different from their ancestors.
