WASABI-AE (BROCCOLI WITH WASABI SAUCE )

Wasabi-Ae (Broccoli With Wasabi Sauce ) image

You can turn this into a one-dish meal by adding some protein of your choice, such as blanched and cut-up tofu, or poached and shredded chicken breast. The sauce is great with either. Use less wasabi if you find it too strong. From the blog "Just Hungry" . cooking time is approximate

Provided by momaphet

Categories     Vegetable

Time 18m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 -5 cups broccoli, cut up (the flower part broken into small pieces, the stem part peeled and sliced thin)
salt and water (for cooking)
2 1/2 teaspoons wasabi powder, reconstituted to a paste with a few drops of water
4 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons sake
1 tablespoon sugar or 1 tablespoon artificial sweetener, of your choice

Steps:

  • Bring the water and salt to a boil. Cook the broccoli until it's crisp-tender and still a bright green in color. Drain, and refresh very briefly with cold running water. (Note: you can skip this step if you're not in a hurry and have time to cool the broccoli.).
  • In the meantime, mix together all the remaining ingredients except the wasabi in a small pan, and stir over a low heat until the sugar is melted. Let cool, and add the wasabi, reserving 1/2 tsp or so. Mix well until the wasabi is dissolved.
  • Pour the sauce over the broccoli and mix well. Serve at room temperature or chilled, optionally with a little additional wasabi on the side for people to mix into the broccoli as they eat it (if they really like wasabi).

SEARED TUNA WITH TEMPURA AVOCADO AND WASABI SAUCE

Seared Tuna with Tempura Avocado and Wasabi Sauce image

Provided by Food Network

Categories     appetizer

Time 1h10m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 tablespoons cumin
1 tablespoon pepper
4 (4 ounce) pieces sushi grade tuna
Vegetable oil
1 pineapple, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
4 avocado, peeled and sliced
1 cup flour, sifted
1 egg
1 cup cold water
1-ounce wasabi
6 ounces heavy cream
Salt and pepper
Seaweed

Steps:

  • Preheat a fryer to 360 degrees F. Begin by mixing the cumin and pepper in a small bowl. Dip and coat each tuna steak in the cumin mixture. In a hot skillet coated with oil, sear each tuna steak for approximately 2 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan and set aside. The tuna should still be pink.
  • In a hot wok or skillet, saute the diced pineapple and red bell pepper for 2 minutes. Remove from wok and set aside.
  • Prepare the tempura batter right before you are ready to fry. The avocados should be peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch thick slices. To make the batter, mix the flour, egg, and cold water together until all of the ingredients have combined. Dip each avocado piece into the batter and fry until golden, approximately 1 minute. Remove the fried avocado pieces and season.
  • To make the wasabi sauce, combine the wasabi paste and heavy cream in a small saucepot. Bring the sauce to a boil and let reduce. Once the sauce has reduced you are ready to serve.
  • To serve this dish, place the avocado tempura in the center of each plate. Top with tuna and surround with the seaweed. Add a spoonful of the pineapple and peppers, and drizzle some of the wasabi sauce around the plate.

9 WAYS TO USE WASABI THAT'S NOT WITH SUSHI

From spoonuniversity.com
Estimated Reading Time 3 mins
Published 2017-01-25
  • Wasabi Mayo. Is that boring turkey sandwich not doing it for you anymore? If it isn't, try adding some wasabi mayo to it. It will add a fresh kick to any sandwich or whatever else you put mayo on (a spoon?).
  • Wasabi Hummus. We've all heard of different versions of spicy hummus, but wasabi hummus is not one that usually comes up. All you need to do to make this hummus is either buy or make some plain hummus and add wasabi powder to it.
  • Wasabi Guac. For those of you who like your guac with a little extra kick, this is the way to do it. This recipe uses wasabi along with jalapeños, so there is no skimping on the spice.
  • Wasabi Mashed Potatoes. If you're feeling fancy, spice up your normal mashed potatoes with some wasabi powder. They would be the perfect complement to this Asian-style baked chicken.
  • Wasabi Cocktail Sauce. Authentic wasabi comes from a root that is hard to cultivate, so it is hard to find in the U.S. That being said, I just found out that the "wasabi" we eat here in the U.S. is actually just horseradish with food coloring (insert shocked face).
  • Wasabi Salad Dressing. I am not the biggest salad fan, but this dressing sounds so good that I might consider eating one. The cucumber and avocado make this dressing cool and refreshing and then the wasabi gives you a little kick at the end.
  • Wasabi Deviled Eggs. Deviled eggs are a classic southern appetizer, but sometimes the classics need to be updated. Deviled eggs can be kind of plain, so spicing them up with some wasabi is definitely the move.
  • Wasabi Ice Cream. Hear me out here folks. Nowadays ice cream flavors are getting crazier by the minute, but the whole sweet and spicy combo is no joke.
  • Wasabi Pea Crusted Salmon. Wasabi peas are the ultimate spicy snack, but now you can have them for dinner too. The wasabi peas will add a spicy crunch to your salmon that would impress the toughest of critics.
