BUFFALO TOFU 'WINGS'

These make delicious appetizers or a great sandwich filling. They won't fool anyone but they are satisfying and delicious! When feeding to young children, simply omit the hot sauce at the end. They make yummy 'chicken' fingers. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Serve with a vegan dressing.

1 (12 ounce) package extra-firm tofu, drained
¼ cup cornstarch
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vegetarian chicken-flavored bouillon granules
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
½ cup unsweetened soy milk
2 tablespoons canola oil
½ cup cayenne pepper hot sauce
⅓ cup margarine, melted

Steps:

  • Slice tofu into 6 slices. Lay flat onto a clean kitchen towel. Fold towel over to cover tofu completely. Cover with a baking sheet and set a 3- to 5-pound weight on top. Press tofu for about 30 minutes.
  • Combine cornstarch, flour, bouillon, garlic powder, and cayenne powder in a shallow bowl. Pour soy milk into another bowl.
  • Cut each slice of tofu in half, for 12 'wings' total. Dip each slice in soy milk; roll into the cornstarch mixture. Place coated slices on a plate.
  • Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the coated tofu slices. Fry, flipping halfway, until crispy on all sides, 7 to 10 minutes total. Add hot sauce and margarine to the saucepan and stir to coat the tofu.

Buffalo tofu wings are a hot and spicy vegan appetizer for parties, game day snack, and delicious comfort food! They're crispy, satisfying, and so flavorful. Tender strips of tofu are coated in batter, breadcrumbs, and oven baked. After, they're tossed in hot buffalo sauce for a mouth-watering flavor that's packed with heat. Serve with celery sticks and ranch dip, or enjoy the wings on salads and sandwiches.

1 block extra-firm tofu
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup plant-based milk
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
1 cup buffalo sauce, preferably Frank's RedHot Buffalo Sauce
1 tbsp vegan butter

Steps:

  • Remove tofu from its wrapping and drain the water. Use a tofu press or create your own at home. To create your own, wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel or folded paper towels. Place tofu on a plate and top with heavy objects. This could include a cutting board and some books, cans of food, jars of nut butter, etc. Anything heavy will do the trick. Let tofu sit for 15-30 minutes. After, remove the objects and unwrap the tofu. Most of the moisture will have soaked into the towel.
  • Slice the block of tofu into rectangular strips. I recommend creating 9-12 strips.
  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Combine flour, plant-based milk, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, and salt in a bowl. Whisk together. Add plant-based milk and whisk together once more.
  • Add panko breadcrumbs to a bowl.
  • Using a fork, dip one strip of tofu in the wet batter. Flip to coat the other side. Tap off any excess batter. Immediately dip the battered tofu in the breadcrumbs. Toss a few times to evenly coat the tofu. Transfer to the baking sheet. Repeat until all strips are coated.
  • Bake tofu wings for 25 minutes, flipping once halfway through.
  • Combine buffalo sauce and butter in a bowl. Microwave for 1 minute to melt the butter, then mix together.
  • Remove tofu wings from the oven. Dip one wing in the buffalo sauce. Flip to coat both sides. Tap off any excess sauce. Repeat with all wings.
  • Serve the buffalo tofu wings immediately OR bake the wings for another 15 minutes. For crispy wings, I recommend baking them again. Serve with celery sticks and vegan ranch dip. Enjoy!

12 ounces extra firm tofu
1 tablespoon hot sauce (or to taste)
1/2 cup barbecue sauce
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 teaspoon paprika
4 tablespoons olive oil

Steps:

  • Drain the tofu, and then remove excess moisture by cutting it in half lengthwise and microwaving on high, uncovered, for two minutes. Gently squeeze out and wipe off excess moisture, then throw tofu in the freezer for one or two hours before removing to thaw in the fridge -- this will give the tofu a slightly heavier texture.
  • Cut tofu into bite-sized pieces and place in a lidded, flat-bottomed dish to marinade. Combine hot sauce, barbecue sauce, black pepper, and garlic powder in a small bowl. Pour half this mixture over the tofu; reserve the other half for later.
  • Let tofu sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Drain any excess marinade from tofu into reserved bowl of sauce. Combine flour, salt, cayenne and paprika in a bowl. Coat tofu with flour mixture.
  • Heat oil over medium-high heat in a large frying pan. Fry tofu (in batches, if need be) until all sides are golden brown and oil has cooked out. Add remaining sauce mixture to pan, stirring until tofu is well-coated. Serve with ranch or bleu cheese dressing for dipping.

Only 4 ingredients! This is a spin-off from my Soy-Sesame Baked Tofu recipe that I made up. I recently discovered baked tofu, and I am enjoying trying different ways to flavor it. This could be some good game-day football food for vegetarians when everyone else is eating buffalo wings!

1 (14 ounce) package extra firm tofu, water-packed (drained and well-pressed to get as much excess moisture out as possible)
1/8 cup hot sauce (wing-style, such as Frank's)
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1 1/2 tablespoons hidden valley ranch dressing mix (the dry seasoning)

Steps:

  • Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Turn the tofu block onto its side. With a long knife, slice the tofu into 4 equal slices, so the slices are large and flat (they will be about 1/4-inch thick each).
  • In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with the hot sauce, and brush the mixture over both sides of each slice of tofu. Be careful when turning the tofu over so that it doesn't tear too badly (if it does tear a little, it's okay).
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Let the tofu sit and let the sauce sink in while the oven is preheating.
  • Sprinkle the top of all 4 slices evenly with the ranch seasoning before putting in the oven.
  • Bake for 35 minutes, turning once halfway through.
  • You can cube these up and use them for salads, or dip them in ranch dressing for a snack.

1 (8 ounce) container extra-firm tofu
4 tablespoons cornstarch
4 tablespoons unsweetened rice milk
¾ cup panko bread crumbs
⅛ teaspoon garlic powder
⅛ teaspoon paprika
⅛ teaspoon onion powder
⅛ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
⅔ cup vegan Buffalo wing sauce (such as Frank's®)

Steps:

  • Remove tofu block from the package and discard liquid. Wrap tofu in cheesecloth, place on a plate, and cover with a heavy pot until remaining liquid has been squeezed out, about 10 minutes. Remove the cheesecloth and cut tofu into 20 1-inch, bite-sized pieces. Place in a freezer-safe container and freeze, 8 hours to overnight.
  • Remove tofu from freezer and thaw on paper towels or a dry cheesecloth. Pat dry.
  • While tofu is thawing, put cornstarch into a resealable plastic bag. Pour rice milk into a small bowl.
  • Preheat an air fryer to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Place tofu into the bag with the cornstarch, seal, and shake to coat the tofu pieces completely. Remove tofu pieces and dredge each piece in rice milk.
  • Place bread crumbs, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, and pepper in the resealable plastic bag with the cornstarch residue; shake until well mixed. Place each piece of tofu, one at a time, back in the bag with the bread crumbs. Shake the bag until tofu piece is completely coated, tap gently to shake off excess, and place tofu on a wire rack while you repeat with remaining tofu pieces.
  • Add coated tofu to the air fryer basket and cook for 10 minutes. Shake the basket to loosen the pieces. Cook for another 3 minutes or until browned.
  • Place 1/3 cup buffalo sauce in a bowl, add cooked tofu bites, and toss to coat. Drizzle remaining buffalo sauce over tofu and continue tossing to coat. Serve immediately.
