COLE SLAW DRESSING

Cole Slaw Dressing image

This coleslaw dressing is popular and easy to make, and it will dress about 1 head of shredded cabbage. It's our favorite creamy coleslaw dressing.

Provided by Diana Rattray

Categories     Side Dish     Sauce

Time 10m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 1/4 cups mayonnaise
5 to 6 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/2 to 1 teaspoon celery seeds
1/2 teaspoon Creole seasoning (or seasoned salt )
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Salt (to taste)

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • In a large jar or medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, 5 to 6 tablespoons of the sugar, the vinegar, celery seed, Creole seasoning, and black pepper. Whisk to blend or cover the jar and shake it until well blended.
  • Toss with shredded or chopped cabbage and refrigerate for an hour or two before serving for best flavor.
  • This dressing makes enough for about 1 medium head of cabbage . We like to add some grated carrot and onion or onion powder to the mixture, or you could use green cabbage with some shredded red cabbage (see the note about red cabbage and red onion in the Tips and Variations, below).
  • Serve coleslaw with any summer meal, barbecued ribs, grilled chicken, burgers, or pulled pork, or use it to top shredded beef or chicken sandwiches. It is, of course, an essential side to serve with fried catfish or fish and chips.

PRESERVED-FOR-POSTERITY COLE SLAW DRESSING

Preserved-For-Posterity Cole Slaw Dressing image

I'm tired of digging out the recipe card or the cookbook that originally published the basic (now altered) recipe. Here it is, online, so I won't lose it again. I like coleslaw. GOOD coleslaw. This dressing works for me.

Provided by Nadacook

Categories     Salad Dressings

Time 5m

Yield 16 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup Miracle Whip
1/3 cup sugar
3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon prepared horseradish

Steps:

  • Try to follow along here: Whisk together all the ingredients. There. Done. I know, I know -- it's complicated.
  • If you like Jane's Krazy Salt or another blended seasoning, feel free to add a hefty sprinkle of it to the dressing. And by the way, if you despise even the suggestion of horseradish, and you're out of buttermilk, you can stick with the first 4 ingredients and you'll still have a very respectable coleslaw dressing that people like.
  • Pour it over about 2 lbs of shredded cabbage and carrot. 2 lbs is a LOT of coleslaw for a small family or a couple. I halve the recipe and pour it over 1 bag of preshredded coleslaw mix -- and it's STILL a lot of coleslaw. You're supposed to let it sit and soak for anywhere from 2 hours to overnight and yes, you can do that, but I will confess to scooping out my first serving as soon as I've mixed the stuff together. Caution: the template is demanding that I specify servings and I'm just guessing by saying 16. Pour it over about 2 lbs of shredded cabbage and carrot and see how many people get to try your coleslaw.
  • Then you can write a review and complain about my inaccurate servings estimate. ;-).

BETTER DRESSING FOR COLESLAW

Better Dressing for Coleslaw image

I don't think that bought cole slaw dressing is really satisfactory -- generally too salty and bland. So I messed with recipes until I came up with one we realy enjoy. Being sugarless, its diabetic-friendly as well.

Provided by 3KillerBs

Categories     Salad Dressings

Time 5m

Yield 10 oz

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
fresh ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Whisk all ingredients together thoroughly.
  • This will keep a week refridgerated in a tightly-lidded container.
  • Tip -- cabbage coarsely shredded with a knife or a kraut cutter doesn't get as "weepy" and wet if the dish has to sit.

COLESLAW DRESSING

Coleslaw Dressing image

With some of this prepared and waiting in your fridge, and a package of the shredded cabbage coleslaw mix you can buy, you can have a salad on the table in minutes! Recipe easily doubles, or you can also easily just make half. I originally got this recipe from a friend, but I cut back the sugar and changed the type of vinegar used.

Provided by Lennie

Categories     Salad Dressings

Time 5m

Yield 1 1/4 cups

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 cup mayonnaise (not Miracle Whip)
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
1 tablespoon milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon celery seed

Steps:

  • Note that you can adjust the sugar and vinegar amounts to suit your taste, adding more or less of each as you prefer; also note that if you insist on using Miracle Whip, you'll likely want to cut the sugar back.
  • In a blender, food processor, or even in a bowl with a whisk, combine all ingredients well; taste, add more salt if you wish.
  • Either use right away to dress a coleslaw, or store, covered, in the refrigerator; keeps well for several days.
