4 large sweet onions such as Vidalia, Walla Walla, or Oso Sweet (3 to 4 lb total)
1 1/2 cups tomato juice (12 fluid ounces)
1 1/2 cups water
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons molasses (regular or robust; not blackstrap)
1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
8 bacon slices (1/2 pound), halved crosswise

Steps:

  • Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Peel and trim onions, keeping root ends intact, then halve each lengthwise. Arrange, cut sides up, in 1 layer in a 13- by 9- by 2-inch glass baking dish or other 2 1/2-quart shallow baking dish.
  • Bring tomato juice, water, butter, molasses, and salt to a boil in a 2-quart heavy saucepan, stirring occasionally, then pour over onions. Bake onions, uncovered, basting with juices every 30 minutes, until tender, about 2 hours.
  • Lay 2 pieces of bacon side by side over each onion half and continue to bake onions, basting once with juices halfway through baking, until onions are very tender, bacon is browned, and juices are thickened, about 1 hour more.

6 slices bacon, chopped
2 medium (2-1/2" dia)s sweet onions, cut into thin strips
2 tablespoons molasses
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Place bacon in a heavy skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until crisp. Remove bacon, reserving 1 tablespoon drippings in skillet. Crumble bacon, and set aside.
  • Cook onions in reserved drippings for 15 minutes, or until onion is soft and caramel colored. Stir in molasses, salt and pepper. Place in a serving dish, and sprinkle with crumbled bacon.

2 bacon strips, diced
2 beef top sirloin steaks (6 ounces each)
1/2 teaspoon salt, divided
1/2 teaspoon pepper, divided
1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
1-1/2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoon molasses

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove to paper towels with a slotted spoon; drain, reserving 1-1/2 teaspoons drippings in skillet and 1-1/2 teaspoons drippings in a small bowl. Set bowl aside., Sprinkle steaks with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. In skillet, cook steaks over medium heat for 4-6 minutes on each side or until meat reaches desired doneness (for medium-rare, a thermometer should read 135°; medium, 140°; medium-well, 145°). Remove and keep warm., Add onion and reserved drippings to the skillet; saute until tender. Add vinegar, molasses and remaining salt and pepper; heat through. Serve onion mixture with steaks; sprinkle with bacon.

Put these ingredients in your Bean Pot and after about six hours you'll have the best baked beans you've ever tasted! Serve with Baby Back Ribs and Party wings.

2 cups dried navy beans
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
3 tablespoons dark molasses
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1/4 cup ketchup
1 medium onion, peeled, left whole
1/4 lb salt pork

Steps:

  • Remove stones from beans, rinsing well in a colander.
  • Place beans in a large pan, adding a teaspoon of salt along with enough water to cover contents by 3 inches.
  • Over high heat, bring beans to a rolling boil for 2 minutes.
  • Remove pan from heat, cover pan and let stand for 1 hour.
  • Uncover pan, breing contents back to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer until beans are tender (1 to 1 1/2 hours).
  • As necessary, add more water to keep beans well covered.
  • Drain beans well, reserving liquid.
  • In a 2 1/2 quart bean pot (or casserole) combine molasses, brown sugar, mustard, ketchup and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  • Add drained beans. Then stir in enough reserved cooking liquid to cover beans.
  • Mil well.
  • One one side of pot, push whole onion down into beans.
  • Cut several gashes in the salt pork and push it down into beans on other side of the pot.
  • Cover pot, place in oven and set heat to 350 degrees.
  • Bake until beans are bubbling (about 1 hour).
  • Reduce heat to 250 degrees and continue to bake for 6 to 8 hours more, stirring every hour or so.
  • As beans cook, they will absorb liquid.
  • Continue cooking, adding reserved liquid (or water) a little at a time to keep beans moist, but not soupy.
  • Baked beans are done when thick and fragrant, with a deep, brownish red color.
  • When serving, remove and discard onion, while keeping in sliced salt pork if desired.

Made these beans for the first time today and its a winner!! I liked it because there was no sugar in it and it had cinnamon and apricots.....so delicious and the whole house smelled so good!!

2 c dried navy beans
1 tsp fresh ground black pepper
1/2 tsp dried basil leaves
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 1/2 c boiling water
1 Tbsp olive oil
1/4 c molasses
1/4 c ketchup
3 Tbsp maple syrup
1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
2 medium onions ,chopped
8 whole dried apricots chopped into small pieces
1 can(s) 28 oz diced tomatoes

Steps:

  • 1. The night before place beans in a colander and rinse under cold water. Place the beans in the crock pot and cover with fresh cold water to cover by 2 inches.Leave to soak overnight for at least 8 hours or up to 12. The next day drain the beans and rinse again. Put the beans in a pot and cover with 5 cups cold water . Heat to boiling and cook until tender approx 30 mins.Drain. In a small bowl mix together the cinnamon, basil and pepper. Set aside. In a heat safe bowl mix together the boiling water, molasses, maple syrup, vinegar, oil, and ketchup. Mix well and set aside. Place half the beans in the crock pot. Sprinkle with half the apricots and onions. Evenly pour half the tomatoes over top. Sprinkle with half the spice mixture. Repeat. Pour water/ molasses mixture over top, making sure that the liquid is mixed in. Cover and cook on low 8 -10 hours or high 4 - 5 hours.
