OLD-FASHIONED SPLIT PEA SOUP WITH HAM BONE
Not only is this old-fashioned favorite a snap to make but it's economical, too. Carrots, celery and onion accent the subtle flavor of the split peas, while a ham bone adds a meaty touch to this hearty soup. It's sure to chase away autumn's chill. -Laurie Todd, Columbus, Mississippi

HOMEY SPLIT PEA SOUP
This is a very comforting soup that I make often. Mild but delicious, my children have loved it since they were tots. DH likes his soup with a bit of texture, so only half is pureed, but for those of you who prefer a creamier soup, you can puree the entire pot. A leftover ham bone, smoked turkey wings, or Canadian bacon all have worked well when ham hocks weren't available. The original recipe came from The Good Food, Soups, Stews and Pastas cookbook.

SPLIT PEA SOUP
This one is simple and inexpensive. My husband liked it a lot. He walked in while it was cooking and said, "Mmm". Normally, he would not touch split pea soup. It's practically vegetarian too--no bacon or ham hocks to touch--and yet still tastes great. Biscuits go really well with this. In fact, I think you need them to make a filling meal.

FOOD NETWORK MAGAZINE SPLIT PEA SOUP
When I have a ham bone, I've got to make split pea soup. I can't think of a more flavorful delicious use. I found this recipe in Food Network Magazine 1,000 Easy Recipes Super Fun Food For Every Day. It reminded me how simple it really is to make Split Pea Soup. For the spices, I used thyme, oregano, garlic, and cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Although the recipe doesn't call for it, I like potatoes in my split pea soup because of the texture it adds. I also salt in the end because the ham bone adds a lot of salt, plus I like to throw in some nice cut up ham pieces. I doubled this recipe, but I'll post it as written. Serving size is estimated.

HAM HOCK SPLIT PEA SOUP
Every Christmas we make a ham...and then we make pea soup...I love traditional pea soup but wanted it to have just a little more "oompf". so I added a little bit of spices and the results are pretty yummy.. Steps:
- Preperation Steps:
- Make 6 cups of ham stock using either left over ham bone or store bought hamhock - sometimes for a little kick I use a smoked ham or ham hock. Put the ham hocks or ham bone in a pot add 8 quarts of water and the bay leaves and cook on a slow simmer for about 2 hours - this should yield about 6 cups of stock. Let this cool and then taste. **If it is salty then add plain water first and then chicken stock to create a total of 5 additional cups of liquid - total stock should equal about 10 to 12 cups. Put cooled stock in refrigerator to allow fat to rise to the top. Skim off as much fat as possible and set aside.
- Dump the uncooked peas in a dish and pick over.take out any rocks, off color peas etc. Then put them in a pot and add water. Remove any floating debris. Drain and set aside.
- Cooking:
- In a large stock pot, heat 2 - 4 Tablespoons of the ham fat on a medium high heat. Add the onions, carrots and celery and saute till tender.
- Add all the remaining ingredients except the salt and pepper. Reduce the heat and simmer for 45 minutes. Taste. Now add salt and pepper as needed. Continue to cook for an additional 45 minutes or until peas are tender.
- Remove the bay leaf.
- Final step. If you like lumpy, clear broth pea soup then leave as is and enjoy. If you want it a little thick then partially puree 1/2 of the soup and if you want no lumps.Puree away.we use one of those blender sticks and mash around till its partially pureed.
- Hope you all enjoy.

WINTERTIME FRENCH STYLE SPLIT PEA SOUP
A wonderful wintertime pea soup with turmeric, adding a nice bright, cheerful color to the soup. This recipe is versatile, can easily be doubled and more veggies and ham can be added as desired.
