GREEN BEAN-MUSHROOM CASSEROLE WITH CANDIED BACON

Green Bean-Mushroom Casserole with Candied Bacon image

Up your green bean casserole game this year! This green bean-mushroom casserole with candied bacon will be the star of your Thanksgiving side dish lineup.

Categories     Thanksgiving     side dish

Time 1h

Yield 8-10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 14

4 slices bacon
1/4 c. packed dark brown sugar
2 tbsp. pure maple syrup
1 tbsp. kosher salt, plus more to taste
2 lb. green beans, trimmed
1 stick salted butter
1 lb. cremini mushrooms, sliced
2 shallots, thinly sliced
Black pepper, to taste
1 garlic clove, grated
1/4 c. all-purpose flour
2 1/2 c. whole milk
1/2 c. half-and-half
1/2 c. toasted sliced almonds

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 ̊. Lay the bacon slices on a rack set on a rimmed baking sheet. Combine the brown sugar and maple syrup in a small microwave-safe bowl and microwave just until melted, about 15 seconds, then stir. Brush on the top of each slice of bacon. Bake, rotating the pan halfway through, until the bacon is crisp, about 15 minutes. Let sit on the rack for 5 minutes, then lift the bacon off the rack so that it doesn't stick. Return to the rack and let cool completely, about 20 minutes. Chop and set aside.
  • Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add half of the green beans and cook until bright green but still crisp, 3 to 4 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove the beans and immediately plunge into a bowl of ice water. Repeat with the remaining beans. Drain the beans from the ice water once they are cool.
  • Dump out the water from the pot. Add 4 tablespoons butter and melt over medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms, shallots, 1 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper. Cook, stirring, until the mushrooms are softened, 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 minute. Remove everything to a sheet pan.
  • Melt the remaining 4 tablespoons butter in the pot over medium-high heat. Add the flour and whisk to combine. Cook for a minute or two, then pour in the milk, half-and-half, 1 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper. Continue cooking, whisking, until thickened, 6 to 7 minutes.
  • Stir the green beans, mushroom mix, the remaining 1 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper into the sauce. Transfer to a 2-quart baking dish and bake until bubbly, 15 to 20 minutes. Top with the bacon and almonds.

GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE (MUSHROOM, GARLIC AND BACON, OH MY!)

Green Bean Casserole (Mushroom, Garlic and Bacon, Oh My!) image

Every year it is my BF's and my job to bring the green bean casserole to the Thanksgiving dinner. The recipe started with us just adding bacon (because EVERYTHING is better with bacon) and then we added more "stuff" till we came up with this super fattening, garlic laden delight. Maybe next time we might have to add shredded cheese and some sauteed onions. . . food for thought :)

GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE WITH HOMEMADE MUSHROOM GRAVY

Green Bean Casserole with Homemade Mushroom Gravy image

Provided by Guy Fieri

Categories     side-dish

Time 45m

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 18

1 1/2 pounds green beans, trimmed
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 pound mixed gourmet mushrooms, such as shiitakes, creminis and oyster, cleaned and quartered
1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup cream
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
4 medium shallots, sliced and separated into thin rounds
4 medium shallots, sliced and separated into thin rounds
1 cup all-purpose flour
Vegetable oil, for shallow frying

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook until they just turn bright green, 2 to 3 minutes. (You don't want to cook the green beans through as they will cook in the oven also.) Strain and plunge the green beans immediately in a large bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. When cool, drain and set out to dry on paper towels.
  • Set a 12-inch cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the butter and vegetable oil. Once the butter is melted and the pan is hot, add the mushrooms. Cook undisturbed so the mushrooms sear nicely, about 1 minute. Add the thyme and garlic and continue cooking the mushrooms to achieve some nice color. Season with the salt, pepper, cayenne and nutmeg. Cook 2 to 3 more minutes longer, dusting the mushrooms with some of the flour as they release moisture. Stir with a whisk to incorporate the flour (just like making a roux) and gradually add in the chicken stock. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat and add the sour cream and cream. Stir gently and cook over low heat until gravy thickens, 5 to 6 minutes. Add the blanched green beans to the pan and fold together so everything is mixed well. Spread out evenly in the pan. Sprinkle the green beans with the grated Parmesan and transfer to a roasting tray (to catch any spill-over). Bake until the casserole is bubbly and the top is melted and golden, 15 minutes.
  • Pour the vegetable oil into a deep skillet and heat to 350 degrees F. Pour the flour into a large mixing bowl and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Toss the shallot rounds in the seasoned flour, then place in a strainer and shake off any excess flour. Fry the shallots in the hot oil in small batches until golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Drain on paper towels and season with salt while still hot.
  • Top the green bean casserole with the fried shallots and serve.

BACON GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE

Bacon Green Bean Casserole image

This Bacon Green Bean Casserole is a delicious twist on the classic side dish. This version is made without mushrooms or a cream soup. Instead it's made with real ingredients making this a must have side dish every year!

Provided by Janelle

Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 strips of bacon, diced
1 medium yellow onion, diced
2 Tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon garlic paste or 2 teaspoons minced garlic
3 Tablespoons flour
1 cup whole milk
2 Tablespoons sour cream
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 cans french style green beans, drained
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup crispy french fried onions

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350*F
  • Spray a 9x9 casserole dish with cooking spray and set aside.
  • In a medium skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until done but not crispy.
  • Add onion and cook until onion is cooked through and translucent. If there isn't enough bacon fat to help onion cook, add 1 Tablespoon butter. This will depend on how fatty your bacon is.
  • Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  • Remove ingredients from pan and set aside in a bowl.
  • Add 1 Tablespoon butter to hot pan. Once melted add flour and mix well.
  • Slowly whisk in 1/4 cup of milk to flour mixture. This should create a thick paste. Add rest of milk, 1/4 cup at a time (total of 1 cup) whisking continually until all milk is incorporated and mixture is smooth and creamy.
  • Add sour cream and continue to cook until mixture thickens.
  • Once mixture has thickened remove from heat and add black pepper, green beans and bacon mixture. Mix to combined.
  • Pour mixture into prepared baking dish.
  • Top with cheddar cheese then crispy onions.
  • Bake for 30 minutes or until cheese is melted and crispy onions are golden.
  • Serve Immediately.

GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE WITH WALNUT BACON CRUMBLE

Green Bean Casserole With Walnut Bacon Crumble image

Chanterelle mushrooms and a crunchy, sweet, and salty walnut-bacon topping make this holiday side dish a stand-out.

Provided by Andrea Bemis

Categories     HarperCollins     Thanksgiving     Fall     Side     Bacon     Walnut     Green Bean     Mushroom     Soy Free     Peanut Free     Wheat/Gluten-Free     Vegetable

Yield Serves 6 as a side

Number Of Ingredients 15

For the topping:
4 slices thick-cut bacon, finely chopped
1 medium onion, diced
½ cup walnuts
½ cup finely chopped parsley
For the beans and sauce:
1 pound fresh green beans, rinsed and trimmed
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
12 ounces chanterelle mushrooms, roughly chopped
Hefty pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 cloves of garlic, minced
¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup chicken broth
1 cup heavy cream

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 475°F.
  • Make the topping:
  • In a large cast-iron skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until it is lightly crisp (it will cook a little more in the oven, so no need to get it extra crispy). With a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain. Add the onion to the bacon drippings (there should be about 1 tablespoon in the skillet; if there's way more than that, pour out some and save it for future use). Cook the onion until it is soft and tender, about 8 minutes. Transfer it to a bowl.
  • Add the walnuts to the same pan and cook, shaking the pan often, until they are lightly golden, about 5 minutes. Add the walnuts to the bowl with the onion and crumble in the bacon. Add the parsley and toss the whole mixture well. Set aside.
  • Wipe out the skillet (you'll be using it again).
  • Make the beans:
  • Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil. Add the beans and blanch them for 5 minutes. While they cook, prepare a large bowl of ice water. Drain the beans in a colander and immediately plunge them into the ice water to stop the cooking. Drain them again and set them aside.
  • Make the sauce:
  • Melt the butter in the cast-iron skillet set over medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms and a hefty pinch of salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms begin to give up some of their liquid, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the garlic and nutmeg and continue to cook for another 1 to 2 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute. Add the broth and simmer for 1 minute. Decrease the heat to medium-low and add the cream. Cook until the mixture thickens, stirring occasionally, 6 to 8 minutes.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and add the green beans. Sprinkle them evenly with the bacon and onion mixture and bake until bubbly, approximately 15 minutes.
  • Serve immediately.

GREEN BEAN-MUSHROOM CASSEROLE (BY PAULA DEEN)

Green Bean-Mushroom Casserole (By Paula Deen) image

This is a highly rated recipe from Paula Deen of the Food Channel and worth making! I have tweaked it slightly and doubled the complete amounts to suit our tastes --- Paula has a house seasoning blend mix which is 1/2 cup salt mixed with 2 tablespoons black pepper and 2 tablespoons garlic powder, she uses a small amount in this casserole, you have the option of omitting the fresh garlic and adding it in, store the remaining mix in an air tight container for up to 6 months, I strongly recommend using low-sodium cream of mushroom soup

Provided by Kittencalrecipezazz

Categories     Vegetable

Time 50m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/4 cup butter
3 garlic cloves, minced

Steps:
