THE BEST CRISPY TOFU

The Best Crispy Tofu image

The key to getting tofu nice and crispy is to first remove excess moisture. We wrap the block of tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy pan on top of it to press out as much water as possible. When searing the tofu, resist the urge to move it around. Instead, allow it to form a crust before flipping, and then again let it cook undisturbed on the other side until browned.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Time 25m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 13

One 14-ounce block firm tofu, drained
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
Juice of 1 lime
2 teaspoons agave syrup
2 scallions, white parts minced, green parts sliced thin
1/2 teaspoon sriracha
1/2 cup panko
2 tablespoons white sesame seeds
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon onion powder
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons olive oil

Steps:

  • Wrap the tofu in a clean dish towel and place on top of a wire rack set inside a rimmed baking sheet. Place a heavy pan on top of the tofu and let it sit for 5 minutes to release as much moisture as possible. Unwrap the tofu and slice lengthwise into 1/2-inch-thick by 1 1/2-inch-wide planks.
  • Whisk the soy sauce, lime juice, agave syrup, scallion whites and sriracha together in a small bowl and set aside. Mix the panko, sesame seeds, cornstarch, garlic salt, onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt and a few grinds of pepper in a pie dish or shallow bowl. Press the tofu planks into the panko mixture to coat on all sides.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu and cook, undisturbed, until deep golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes. Flip the tofu with a metal spatula and continue cooking undisturbed until a deep golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes more. Transfer to a platter.
  • Reduce the heat to low and add the soy-sauce mixture to the pan. Cook until bubbling and slightly thicker, 1 to 2 minutes. Pour the sauce over the tofu planks and sprinkle with the scallion greens.

CRISPY TOFU BITES

Crispy Tofu Bites image

With a crisp crust and juicy, flavorful interior, these plant-based crispy tofu bites are an easy delicious bar-snack that carnivores and vegans will enjoy alike.

Provided by Marc Matsumoto

Categories     Appetizer     Entree

Time 1h22m

Number Of Ingredients 9

453 grams medium-firm tofu
1/8 teaspoon salt
6 grams ginger
6 grams garlic ((grated))
1/4 cup mirin
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon black pepper ((coarsely ground))
2 teaspoons toasted sesame seeds
Scallion greens ((chopped for garnish))

Steps:

  • Drain the tofu on a wire rack for at least one hour.
  • Set the tofu on a few layers of paper towels and cut it into 9 cubes. Sprinkle them evenly on all sides with the salt.
  • Grate the ginger into a pan and then gather up the pulp and squeeze out as much juice as you can into the pan. Discard the pulp.
  • Add the grated garlic, mirin, soy sauce, and black pepper to the pan. Bring the mixture to a boil and continue boiling until the sauce just starts to thicken and it no longer smells like alcohol (about a minute after it comes to a full boil). Transfer the sauce to a bowl and set aside.
  • To fry the tofu, heat 2-inches of oil in a heavy-bottomed pot until it reaches 360 degrees F (180 C). Be sure to use a deep pot and don't fill it more than 1/2 way as the the moisture in the tofu will make the oil bubble a lot.
  • Pat the tofu dry on all sides with fresh paper towels and carefully lower the tofu into the hot oil using tongs.
  • Fry the tofu undisturbed for about 5-6 minutes or until you're able to pull the tofu away from the bottom of the pot without breaking it. Flip the tofu over and let it continue frying for another 5-6 minutes or until it's golden brown on all sides.
  • Transfer the hot tofu straight into the bowl with the sauce and sprinkle on the sesame seeds. Toss to coat the tofu with glaze and then transfer the tofu to a serving plate.
  • Garnish with more sesame seeds, black pepper, and chopped scallion greens.

THE BEST SPICY & CRISPY TOFU BITES

The Best Spicy & Crispy Tofu Bites image

This delicious crispy tofu recipe takes less than 30 minutes to make, and it will make you fall in love with tofu.

Provided by Linda & Alex

Categories     Entree     Main Course

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 8

15 ounce extra-firm tofu (Pressed for at least 15 minutes)
1 cup tapioca starch (See Note)
¼ cup vegetable oil (See Note)
½ cup soy sauce or tamari (See Note)
¼ cup water
2 tablespoon fresh squeezed lime juice
1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce (See Note)
2 teaspoon pure maple syrup or agave syrup

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, whisk the ½ cup tamari or soy sauce, ¼ cup water, 2 tbsp lime juice, 1 tbsp chili garlic sauce (see note), and 2 tsp maple syrup together until fully combined.
  • Place the tofu in a tofu press, or on a plate between paper towels with something heavy on top, and press for at least 15 minutes to remove the excess water. The less water in the tofu the better the texture.
  • Slice the tofu into cubes. See the photos in the content above.
  • In a large bowl, toss the cubed tofu with the 1 cup of tapioca starch until all sides are coated in the starch.
  • In a wok or a cast-iron skillet, heat the ¼ cup of vegetable oil on high heat. When the oil is hot (add a bit of extra starch from the bowl to the pan, if it sizzles, it's ready), add the tofu evenly in the pan. Use a metal spatula to turn the tofu often. You want all sided to get crispy and brown. Add a tablespoon of extra oil if needed.
  • After about 10 minutes, the tofu should have a lightly browned and crispy crust. Now add half of the chili garlic sauce and use the spatula to gently toss the tofu to coat all sides in the sauce. If you're not stir-frying vegetables, use all of the sauce for the tofu, otherwise, use half of the sauce for the vegetables.
  • If you're going to stir fry vegetables, remove the tofu from the pan and add another tablespoon of oil and cook the veggies. When they're done, coat them in the other half of the sauce and add the tofu back to the pan to heat it.
  • Preheat the oven to 425˚F (218˚C)
  • In a large bowl, toss the cubed tofu with the 1 cup of tapioca starch until coated on all sides.
  • Spread the tofu on a parchment lined baking sheet and spray a light layer of oil on top.
  • Bake for 10 minutes and turn the tofu. Bake for another 10 minutes and evenly drizzle half of the chili sauce on the tofu and carefully toss to coat all sides. Bake for another 10 minutes, or until the tofu is crispy.
  • Use the other half of the sauce to coat stir-fried vegetables or for dipping the tofu bites.
  • ENJOY!

THAI BAKED TOFU

Thai Baked Tofu image

I'm always on the lookout for simple baked tofu recipes. This one is influenced by Thai cuisine. The fiery curry flavored tofu is crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The recipe was found in The Giant Book of Tofu Cooking.

Provided by Dreamer in Ontario

Categories     Soy/Tofu

Time 50m

Yield 24 triangles

Number Of Ingredients 3

24 ounces firm tofu, drained and pressed
1/3 cup Thai curry paste
3 tablespoons soy sauce

Steps:

  • Cut each block of tofu in three slices that are about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Stack the slices, then cut through all the layers diagonally, making an 'x' (The resulting shapes will look like triangles),.
  • Combine the curry paste and soy sauce.
  • In a lightly oiled baking dish, arrange the tofu triangles; cover them with the curry paste and soy sauce mixture (I like to skip the oil and line my dish with parchment paper. It helps with the clean up, too) .
  • Bake at 350F for 45 minutes, turning twice during the baking process.

HOW TO MAKE CRISPY BAKED TOFU

How to Make Crispy Baked Tofu image

Here is how to make super crispy tofu in the oven. Recipe yields 4 servings of tofu, as a complement to a larger meal.

Provided by Cookie and Kate

Categories     Protein

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 block (12 to 15 ounces) organic extra-firm tofu
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon tamari* or soy sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot starch

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the tofu from sticking.
  • To prepare the tofu: Drain the tofu and use your palms to gently squeeze out some of the water. Slice the tofu into thirds lengthwise so you have 3 even slabs. Stack the slabs on top of each other and slice through them lengthwise to make 3 even columns, then slice across to make 5 even rows (see photos).
  • Line a cutting board with a lint-free tea towel or paper towels, then arrange the tofu in an even layer on the towel(s). Fold the towel(s) over the cubed tofu, then place something heavy on top (like another cutting board, topped with a cast iron pan or large cans of tomatoes) to help the tofu drain. Let the tofu rest for at least 10 minutes (preferably more like 30 minutes, if you have the time).
  • Transfer the pressed tofu to a medium mixing bowl and drizzle with the olive oil and tamari. Toss to combine. Sprinkle the starch over the tofu, and toss the tofu until the starch is evenly coated, so there are no powdery spots remaining.
  • Tip the bowl of tofu over onto your prepared baking sheet and arrange the tofu in an even layer. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, tossing the tofu halfway, until the tofu is deeply golden on the edges. Use as desired.

AIR FRYER TOFU BITES - CRISPY!

Air Fryer Tofu Bites - Crispy! image

You should use firm or extra firm tofu so it doesn't break apart. Squeezing out excess water helps the tofu cook crisper.

Provided by Diane

Categories     Appetizer     Main Course     Side Dish     Snack

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 6

14 oz. firm or extra firm tofu (, (1 block) drained)
1 teaspoon lemon pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
oil spray (, for coating)
Sauce for dipping: soy sauce (, bbq sauce, teriyaki sauce, chili garlic sauce)

Steps:

  • Preheat air fryer at 400°F for 5 minutes.
  • Gently squeeze or press-out excess water from the tofu block. Cut tofu into 1" cubes.
  • Add tofu cubes to bowl. Spray evenly with oil around all sides. Sprinkle half the amount of spices: lemon pepper, garlic powder, and salt evenly around all the tofu cubes. Gently stir or toss. Repeat with another layer of light oil spray and remainder of spices.
  • Air Fry at 400°F for 10 minutes. Gently flip over the tofu cubes or shake the basket so tofu can tumble and turn. Continue to Air Fry for another 10 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Check the texture of the tofu. If you want it more crispy, then Air Fry for additional 5-10 minutes OR until the tofu is to your liking. We like our tofu extra crispy with an outside crust so we'll cook it for an extra 7 minutes.
  • Allow to slightly cool and dip in your favorite sauce.

CRISPY BAKED BUFFALO TOFU WINGS

Crispy Baked Buffalo Tofu Wings image

Spicy, delicious, and indulgent-tasting these crispy baked buffalo tofu wings make the perfect appetizer or finger food for your next party or nibbly dinner and are excellent on top of a salad!

Provided by Eva

Categories     Appetizers

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 lb extra firm or super firm tofu
6 tbsp cornstarch, arrowroot, or tapioca starch
1/4 cup plant milk
1 cup panko style bread crumbs
2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp salt
freshly ground black pepper
1 tbsp fresh minced parsley
6 tbsp (90g) red cayenne pepper hot sauce, ideally Franks RedHot
3 tbsp (35g) vegan butter
1/8 tsp granulated garlic
1/8 tsp salt
Vegan bleu cheese or ranch style dressing

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425 ºF and lightly grease a large rimmed baking sheet.
  • If using extra-firm tofu press out the extra water: Slice your tofu into 6 width-wise slabs and wrap in a lint-free towel or paper towel. Place some weights over the wrapped tofu, like a heavy cast iron skillet or books atop a baking sheet. Let drain for about 20-30 minutes before continuing.
  • Cut your tofu into 18 'wings' or ~1/2" sticks. Cut the block of tofu into 6 slices width-wise if you haven't already for pressing, then slice each of those slabs into 3 slices lengthwise.
  • Put the cornstarch (or arrowroot or tapioca starch) in one bowl, the plant milk in a second bowl, and mix together the bread crumb mixture in a third bowl. Pour some of the bread crumb mixture onto a plate.
  • Dip each tofu 'wing' into the starch, followed by the milk, then roll in the breadcrumbs on the plate. Place the wing onto the prepared baking sheet and repeat with the remaining 'wings.' Use one hand for the starch and bread crumbs and your other for the milk to keep breading from clumping on your fingers. Add more of the breadcrumb mixture to the plate as needed.
  • Bake the prepared tofu at 425 ºF for 25 minutes, flip, then bake an additional 10-15 minutes until the tofu wings are nice and crispy.
  • While they're baking, make the buffalo sauce. Melt the vegan butter and stir in the hot sauce, granulated garlic, and salt.
  • Put the tofu wings in a large mixing bowl and toss with the buffalo sauce to coat. Serve immediately.
  • Leftover buffalo tofu wings can be re-crisped in the oven.

Provided by Anna Glover

Time 15m

Yield Serves 2-4

Number Of Ingredients 7

400g block firm tofu
3 tbsp cornflour
½ tsp garlic granules
½ tsp smoked paprika
½ tsp fine sea salt
½ tsp ground black pepper
2 tbsp vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Drain the tofu, wrap in 4-5 sheets of kitchen paper, put on a plate and put something heavy over the top, like a wooden chopping board, or a tray with a few tins on it. Leave for 20 mins to drain the excess moisture from the tofu.

  • Toss the tofu pieces in the spiced cornflour to coat all over. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium-high heat. Fry the tofu for 2-4 mins on each side until golden, crunchy and browned at the edges. Smaller cubes will take 2 mins each side, larger triangles will take 4 mins. • The key to cripsy tofu is drain as much water out as possible. Therefore we recommend letting the tofu drain for at least 24 hours in your refrigerator. Do this by removing it from the container, slice it in half, and sit both halfs on a stack or 1 or 2 folded paper towels on your cutting board. Next, Place 1 or 2 folded paper towels on top of the tofu halves and set something heavy on top of them. I like to use my cast iron skillet. Set the cutting board in the refrigerator.
  • Preheat the oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Use a papertowel to rub or oil spritzer to spray oil on the parchment paper. This prevents the tofu from sticking to the parchment paper and saves you from scrubbing the oil off of your pan.
