HONEY AND CAROB BROWNIES

Honey and Carob Brownies image

This recipe is delicious. I love it because it uses carob instead of chocolate. Carob is similiar to cocoa, except it requires about half the sugar to get it to be sweet like chocolate. It was sent to me by Holy Food Imports (www.holyfoodimports.com) which is my favorite food company, after purchasing their products, with permission to share!

CAROB BROWNIES

Carob Brownies image

These are dense, moist, and deeply carob-y. I like to serve them chilled very cold with whipped cream. They are more fudgelike than cakelike. This recipe comes from my sister who served them to me after my son was born. I believe she got this from the "Deaf County Country Cookbook."

CAROB BROWNIES

Carob Brownies image

These brownies are almost fat free, low sugar and provide around 100 calories each... They have a much lighter taste than regular brownies and admittedly lack some richness but they are still delicious, especially with a tiny bit of chocolate spread to finish them off!

Provided by bakergirl89

Time 40m

Yield Makes 14-18

Number Of Ingredients 0

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 190degrees (fan) Mix together the carob powder, flour, sugar and baking powder in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, mix the water, milk, eggs, oil and mashed bananas. Pour the wet into the dry ingredients with the vanilla extract and mix thoroughly.
  • Now add the chopped walnuts if using them. You could also add dark chocolate chips if you wish. At this point, if the mixture is too thick, add a little extra milk until it is looks thick but stir-able.
  • Transfer the mix to a greased, non-stick brownies tray (could use baking parchment but I didn't seem to need it).
  • Cook in the preheated oven for around 20-30 minutes - the brownies will feel firm to the touch, not wobbly like normal brownies.

  • Naturally low-fat. Carob powder contains virtually no fat. If you’re on a low-fat diet, carob powder is a good option. Just keep in mind that it’s higher in sugar and carbs than cocoa powder.
  • Low in sodium. According to the Mayo Clinic, the average American gets 3,400 mg of sodium daily. This is much more than the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of 2,300 mg.
  • Contains calcium, but no oxalates. Calcium is a mineral. It’s important for bone health. It also helps your heart, nerves, and muscles function well. Two tablespoons of carob powder have 42 mg of calcium, or 4 percent of the RDA.
  • High in fiber. Two tablespoons of carob powder have almost 5 grams of fiber, over 20 percent of the RDA. Fiber helps: you stay fuller longer to help you eat less.
  • Gluten-free. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and triticale. In some people, gluten triggers their immune system to attack the small intestines.
  • Helps relieves diarrhea. Thanks to its tannin content, carob powder has been used as a natural remedy for diarrhea. Tannins are polyphenols found in some plants.
  • Caffeine-free. Caffeine is a great pick-me-up, but too much may cause unpleasant side effects, such as: insomnia. fast heart rate. nervousness. irritability. upset stomach.
  • Good source of antioxidants. According to a 2003 study, carob fiber is a rich source of polyphenol antioxidants. The study identified 24 polyphenol compounds in carob fiber, mainly gallic acid and flavonoids.
  • Free of tyramine. Tyramine is a byproduct of tyrosine, an amino acid. According to the National Headache Foundation, foods that contain tyramine may trigger migraine headaches.
