Navy (Haricot) Beans cooked in a smokey tomato sauce.

1 tbsp Olive oil
2 cloves Garlic, minced
1 - 2 tsp Spanish Smoked Paprika (* See Notes)
300g (1 1/3 cups) Passata
1 tbsp Tomato Puree (Tomato Paste)
60ml (1/4 cup) Chicken / Vegetable Stock (*See Notes)
300g (10.5oz) Can Haricot (Navy) beans (drained weight 195g/ 6.8oz) (* See Notes)

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a sauce pan over a medium heat.
  • Add the garlic and allow to sizzle but be careful not to burn.
  • Reduce heat to low, add the smoked paprika and stir.
  • Add the passata, puree and stock and then simmer for around 20 mins (until the sharp taste of tomato has gone and the sauce has thickened.)
  • Add the beans and simmer for a further 10 mins.
  • Season to taste (SEE NOTES)

If you prefer a sweet taste then leave the brown sugar at 1 cup --- I suggest to use only Heinz chili sauce the flavor seems to work the best for this --- prep time does not include frying the bacon... these beans are *very* good!

1/2 lb bacon, cooked and crumbled (can use more)
2 (28 ounce) cans baked beans
1 (12 ounce) bottle Heinz Chili Sauce
2 medium onions, chopped
3/4 cup brown sugar (increase for a sweeter taste)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Steps:

  • Set oven to 350 degrees.
  • Grease a casserole dish (use any size to hold the beans).
  • Mix all ingredients in a large bowl, then transfer to prepared casserole dish.
  • Bake uncovered for about 1 hour.

1 tsp rapeseed oil
1 large onion (185g), finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, finely grated
500g passata
3 pitted dates (about 15g), roughly chopped
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
2 tsp bouillon powder
1 bay leaf
3 x 400g haricot beans, drained
4 medium cooked jacket potatoes

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a non-stick saucepan over a low heat and fry the onion for 5 mins until golden. Add a drop of water if it looks like it's starting to burn.
  • Stir in the garlic, then tip in the passata, dates, vinegar, bouillon and bay leaf. Grind in plenty of black pepper and simmer for 5 mins.
  • Tip in the beans and 400ml water, then simmer for 10 mins, stirring every now and then until thick. To freeze, leave to cool completely, then divide between freezer bags and freeze for up to three months. Defrost thoroughly in the fridge overnight and reheat in a pan until piping hot. Serve over jacket potatoes.

  • Baked bean patties. Mash a 420g can baked beans. Mix in 1 small chopped onion, 1/2 grated carrot, 1 egg and 1/2 cup flour. Mould into patties. Fry each side until golden brown.
  • Say cheese. Make cheesy jacket potatoes. Bake 2 medium potatoes at 200ºC for 50 minutes or until tender. Remove from oven, cut each in quarters to halfway down only.
  • Pizza perfect. Spread no-added-salt tomato paste onto wholemeal pita bread. Top with a 220g can baked beans. Add your choice of toppings and a pinch of dried basil and oregano.
  • Pasta pronto. Join two favourites for a quick, fuss-free dish: simply add heated baked beans in tomato sauce to cooked, wholemeal spaghetti and top with parmesan cheese.
  • Makeover cottage pie. Chop 1 onion and 2 garlic cloves. Pan-fry in oil until soft. Add 500g beef mince. Break up lumps. Brown meat. Stir in a 420g can baked beans, 1/2 cup no-added-salt tomato paste and 1/2 cup beef stock.
  • Get full-on frittata. Chop onion and garlic. Fry over a low heat until golden. Stir in a 220g can baked beans, 1 chopped tomato and 6 whisked eggs. Sprinkle with grated cheese and chopped parsley.
