Even though this is a very old recipe, I thought it might be something new to the "young whipper-snappers" who have recently joined Zaar. It was always a popular appetizer.

1 (8 ounce) can water chestnuts, drained
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
8 slices bacon, cut in half crosswise

Steps:

  • Marinate the water chestnuts in soy sauce for 1 hour.
  • Drain.
  • Roll each chestnut in the brown sugar.
  • Wrap each chestnut with a piece of bacon.
  • Secure with a toothpick.
  • Arrange on a cake rack in a shallow baking pan.
  • Bake at 400 degrees F for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Drain on paper towels.
  • NOTE: This can be prepared ahead of time and stored in refrigerator until ready to bake.

My mother used to make these and keep them warm on a warming tray (the kind you plug into the wall) for appetizers. These are really easy and my dh loved these simple appetizers -- plus they can be considered emergency appetizers too as it's easy to have the three ingredients (bacon, a can of water chestnuts and brown sugar) needed to make these on hand all the time.

24 water chestnuts (1 small can, drained)
2 tablespoons brown sugar
8 pieces bacon, cut into thirds (24 pieces of bacon)

Steps:

  • Combine water chestnuts with sugar.
  • Wrap bacon piece around water chestnuts attaching with a toothpick; repeat for all remaining bacon and water chestnuts. ***You can do this hours ahead and refrigerated.
  • In a 425-degree F oven, roast wrapped water chestnuts for 15 minutes or until bacon is golden brown.
  • Serve hot or keep warm on a hot plate (see description).

Steps:

  • Cut bacon slices in half and wrap one piece around each water chestnut.
  • Secure with a tooth pick.
  • Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees until bacon is crisp, about 30 minutes.
  • Mix mayo, chili sauce, and brown sugar in a small sauce pan and simmer until heated through.
  • Place cooked water chestnuts in an ovenproof baking dish and cover with sauce.
  • Cover dish and bake at 325 degrees for 30 minutes.
