  • Eggs. It's only January, yet the word of the year has already been decided: "eggflation." We're referring, of course, to the ongoing crisis in the nation's egg supply.
  • Tinned Fish. San Francisco-based chef Ali Hooke kickstarted a new craze in 2022 with her series of "tinned fish date night" videos on TikTok. Every Friday night, Hooke showcased a new spread of assorted tinned fish—anchovies, sardines, smoked mussels, and the like—which she and her husband enjoyed with crackers and wine.
  • Beef. Wendy's iconic 1984 catchphrase "Where's the beef?" could make a huge comeback this year as the meat scarcity looms. In 2022, ranchers and farmers faced all kinds difficulties due to record-breaking weather events.
  • Champagne. Rumors of a possible champagne shortage have been bubbling up all over the news, and it's not a new concern. The demand for the beverage began to skyrocket in 2021—an unforeseen turn of events after a strong drop in sales during the peak of the pandemic in 2020.
  • Lettuce. If eating more salads was one of your New Year's resolutions, you may be in trouble (either that, or you now have the perfect excuse to cheat on your diet).

  • Chickpeas. We love our hummus, but according to Reuters, we might see a drop in the supply of chickpeas soon. The Russian invasion of Ukraine resulted in a drop in production, as both countries are key suppliers of chickpeas for the world.
  • Wheat. Ukraine is one of the main suppliers of wheat in the world, and its invasion by Russia disrupted the supply chain entirely, according to Bloomberg.
  • Sugar. According to Reuters, Brazil recently diverted more sugarcane to ethanol production, rather than sugar, due to high energy prices. Ethanol, aka alcohol, is used for a variety of products.
  • Avocados. You may be seeing less of this fruit (yes, avocado is a fruit) on shelves. The American government suspended imports of Mexican avocados earlier this year after a U.S plant safety inspector based in Mexico received a threat.
  • Paper Goods. This is an item that we’ve seen at the top of shortage lists for the last two years—toilet paper. According to Bloomberg, pulp supplies have been affected yet again by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, causing shortages of supply from Europe.
