BLOOD ORANGE MARGARITA

2 lime wedges, plus 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
Coarse salt, for the glass
Ice cubes, for the cocktail shaker and the glass
1 1/2 ounces blanco tequila
3/4 ounce agave
1 tablespoon frozen blood orange puree, thawed (see Cook's Note)

Steps:

  • Rub 1 of the lime wedges around the outside of the rim of the margarita glass, and then roll it in the salt. Fill the glass with ice.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour the tequila, lime juice, agave and blood orange puree over the ice. Shake vigorously 10 times. Strain into the margarita glass, garnish with the remaining lime wedge and serve.

Steps:

  • Add the first 5 ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice; shake vigorously.
  • Strain into a chilled margarita glass filled with ice cubes.
  • To serve a frozen version-combine the first 5 ingredients with ¾ cup crushed ice in a blender; blend until smooth; pour into a margarita glass.
  • Garnish with a blood orange wedge.

1 1/2 cups Cointreau liqueur or 1 1/2 cups triple sec
3 1/2 cups silver tequila
1 blood orange (or normal orange)
1/4 cup kosher salt

Steps:

  • Mix the Blood Orange Juice, Lime Juice, Cointreau and Tequila together in a large pitcher.
  • Refrigerate for 30 minutes, or until chilled.
  • Moisten the rim of the margarita glasses with a wedge of orange (oranges are fine if you are unable to locate blood oranges) and dip in the salt.
  • Add ice to the pitcher, shake the mixture and strain into the salted margarita glasses. Garnish each with a slice of blood orange.
  • Leftovers? Freeze and blend at a later celebration!
