Spicy Southwestern-Style Turkey Burgers Recipe by Tasty image

Here's what you need: ground turkey, red onion, jalapeño pepper, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cumin, smoked paprika, vegetable oil, sesame seed bun, shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, pepper jack cheese, avocado, mayonnaise, canned chilies in adobo, lime

Provided by Jordan Kenna

Categories     Dinner

Yield 4 burgers

Number Of Ingredients 17

1 lb ground turkey
⅓ cup red onion, minced
1 jalapeño pepper, minced
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 ½ teaspoons cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
2 tablespoons vegetable oil, for cooking
sesame seed bun
shredded lettuce
sliced tomato
pepper jack cheese
avocado
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons canned chilies in adobo
½ lime, juiced

Steps:

  • Place turkey, onion, jalapeño, and spices together in a large bowl and mix together until all the ingredients are incorporated.
  • Lightly wet your hands and use them to shape 4 circular patties about 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter.
  • Heat up about 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat.
  • Cook burgers for 2 minutes on the first side, then flip, lower heat to low, and cook them for an additional 5-6 minutes. Top with pepper jack cheese during the last minute.
  • NOTE: The turkey burgers must be cooked through. Use a meat thermometer to check each patty for an internal temperature of at least 165˚F (75˚C) before removing from pan.
  • Assemble the burgers as desired with bun, chipotle mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and preferred condiments.
  • Enjoy!

1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon chili powder

1/4 teaspoon salt, plus more for sprinkling
1/2 lime
1 1/3 lbs ground turkey, lean
1 (4 ounce) can green chilies, diced and drained
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
light cooking spray
4 slices 50% -reduced-fat monterey jack pepper cheese

1/2 avocado, sliced

Steps:

  • For the sweet potato fries, preheat the oven to 425 degrees.

  • Top with the reduced-fat pepper-jack cheese during the last minute.
  • Toast the rolls in the oven or in a toaster oven. Alternatively, grill them 1 minute on each side.
  • To assemble: On a platter, place the fries and a burger on a bun and top with lettuce, tomato, onion and avocado slices. Squeeze lime juice over the fries and serve.

SPICY SOUTHWESTERN TURKEY BURGERS

Spicy Southwestern Turkey Burgers image

WARNING: These are SPICY! But, the flavor is fantastic. If you are looking for something different....this is it! Garnish these as you would any other burger...lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, mustard or ketchup. We used a spicy chipotle pepper cheese as well - these were fantastic. The chipotle peppers and the cumin give these a really smoky flavor.

SOUTHWESTERN TURKEY BURGERS

Southwestern Turkey Burgers image

These turkey burgers get their kick and flavor from incorporating jalapeño peppers, Monterey Jack, breadcrumbs, and mayonnaise right into the patty. And the best part is they come together in just 25 minutes.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Ingredients     Meat & Poultry     Turkey Recipes

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/2 pounds ground dark meat turkey (93% lean)
1 jalapeno chile, minced (ribs and seeds removed for less heat, if desired)
2 ounces grated Monterey Jack cheese (about 1/2 cup)
1/4 cup plain dried breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
Coarse salt and ground pepper
Vegetable oil, for grates
4 hamburger buns, split horizontally
Desired toppings: Fresh Tomato Salsa, sliced avocado, sliced pickled jalapeno chiles

Steps:

  • Heat grill to medium-high. In a medium bowl, place turkey, jalapeno, cheese, breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon coarse salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Mix very gently with a fork to combine, being careful not to overwork meat (which would make burgers dense).
  • Gently form meat into 4 equal-size patties, 4 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick. Press thumb in the center of each patty to make an indentation approximately 1/2-inch deep (this helps keep burgers flat during grilling).
  • Moisten a folded paper towel with oil; grasp with tongs and rub over grates. Season burgers with salt and pepper; grill until cooked throughout, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Serve on buns (toasted on grill, if you like), with desired toppings.

  • Slice sweet potato into 1/4-inch-thick matchsticks. Place on a baking sheet, drizzle with oil, and toss to coat. Sprinkle with 1/8 tsp. salt. Bake, flipping halfway through, until tender and crisp-edged, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, prepare burgers: Using your hands, mix turkey, Cheddar, Worcestershire, garlic powder, pepper, and salt in a medium bowl. Shape into two 4-inch patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
  • Brush oil over a medium nonstick or cast-iron skillet; set it over medium heat for 2 minutes. (Alternatively, to grill, see Tip.) Add the patties and cook for 2 minutes. Flip and cook for 2 more minutes. Cover the pan and continue to cook until the patties are lightly browned but still juicy (the juices should run clear, not pink), and an instant-read thermometer inserted in the center registers 165 degrees F, 2 to 4 minutes more.
