10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT SHIRLEY TEMPLE BLACK ...

From sheknows.com
  • She was a total romantic. Shortly after Black’s first marriage ended, the star took a trip to Hawaii with her family to clear her mind. It was there she met Charles Black, a formal naval officer whom she’d come to call her soul mate.
  • She inspired thousands. You may have already known that Black had a mastectomy in 1972 after she found a malignant lump on her left breast. What you may not know is that her willingness to discuss it publicly bolstered the courage of women everywhere — 50,000 of whom sent Black cards and letters thanking her for her candor.
  • She was a foodie. Black loved a good meal! She often joked of being born at 9 p.m. that it was “too late for dinner, and so I started life one meal behind.”
  • She likened herself to a dog (albeit a famous one) While many laud Black as the most famous child star of all time, she is decidedly more modest in her self-assessment.
  • She could have been a pie-pedaler. On her website, Black admitted she didn’t always wanted to be an entertainer — she once wanted to be a pie salesman.
  • She was a pain in Eleanor Roosevelt’s rump. Naturally, Black didn’t get in too much trouble. Who could stay angry at those dimples? But she did recall to People magazine that she remembered being spanked after a barbecue given by Eleanor Roosevelt at Hyde Park.
  • She was a sweet and chic ambassador. One of Black’s greatest legacies is actually her diplomacy. She was the first woman to serve as a U.S. Chief of Protocol, the first ever Honorary U.S. Foreign Services Officer and Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana — the latter of which she called “the best job” she ever had.
  • She could have made a million in a kissing booth. Clearly, Black had a face people simply couldn’t resist… and often didn’t try. “You can see a glint in the eye and you know a big sloppy one is coming,” Black told People.
  • She lost most of her child star money. Unfortunately for Black, her father — who never finished high school — was not good with numbers, and made some bad business deals.
  • She had 56 signature curls. Although Black’s mother was often unfairly portrayed as a stern stage mom, the actress asserted that was far from the truth.

10 SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT SHIRLEY TEMPLE | LITTLETHINGS.COM

From littlethings.com
  • Her First Starring Role Was Surprisingly Racy. At just 3, Shirley starred in the 1932 parody Baby Burlesks. She wore pint-sized versions of lacy lingerie as a "dancer" who charmed two equally young male babies playing World War I soldiers.
  • She Always Had The Exact Same Number Of Curls. During productions, Shirley's mother styled her iconic hairdo into pin curls at night — exactly 56 curls each time.
  • She Helped Boost Morale During The Great Depression. While addressing the economic plight, Franklin D. Roosevelt was quoted saying, "As long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right."
  • An Onscreen Kiss Caused A Scandal. Shirley played the title role in the 1942 flick Miss Annie Rooney where her costar, Dickie Moore, gave her a chaste smooch on the cheek.
  • She Was Almost Dorothy. While casting The Wizard of Oz, Shirley's name popped up quite a few times. Obviously, Judy Garland made the role of Dorothy Gale one of her most beloved performances instead.
  • She Was Only 17 When She Married Her First Husband. Like many of her milestones, she was quite young when she said "I do" to actor and soldier John Agar.
  • Her Second Husband Wasn't A Fan Of Her Movies. That's because, as he admitted to her, Charles Black (not Red Skelton, pictures above) simply never saw any of them!
  • She Remains The Youngest Oscar Honoree. In fact, she was the first performer to win the Academy Juvenile Award in 1935 at the age of 6. By that time, Shirley had appeared in over 20 short- and full-length films.
  • She Once Held A Press Conference From A Hospital Room. Back in 1972, a time when talking so openly about one's health seemed too intimate for public conversation, she bravely revealed her battle with breast cancer from her hospital bed.
  • She Was A Girl Scout. When she wasn't starring in Hollywood films, Shirley earned her patches with fellow scouts, just like any other youngster. Were you surprised by any of these Shirley Temple facts?
