Taverns are similar to sloppy joes, just not as "tomato-y;" I have made these for many church and work pot-lucks by increasing the quantities. For Zaar I cut the recipe down to 4 servings. I have had this recipe for many years and really don't have a clue where I first came across it. Works great in the Crock Pot.

Steps:
- In a medium skillet, brown ground beef until no longer pink, drain fat.
- Over medium heat add additional ingredients to ground beef.
- Simmer a minimum of 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

SHAKER FRIED CHICKEN
This is so simple. A pan-fried chicken and gravy recipe that goes great with a simple salad and mashed potatoes (to sop up all the creamy gravy). I love Shaker cooking, I think I got this recipe about 40 years ago at the Hancock Shaker Village.

Steps:
- Mix flour and salt and pepper in a plastic (Ziploc) bag.
- Add chicken pieces, and shake until coated.
- Heat butter and oil together in a large skillet. Add chicken pieces and brown well on both sides.
- Remove chicken pieces when browned and drain fat from skillet. Return chicken to skillet, skin side up.
- Pour half-and-half over chicken, cover skillet, and cook over low heat for 35-40 minutes, until chicken is cooked through and tender.

SHAKER CHICKEN
Chicken in rich creamy sauce. Serve with a bowl of steaming mashed potatoes and crisply cooked fresh vegetables.

Steps:
- Season the chicken with salt and pepper.
- Melt butter in a large saucepan, add the chicken and saute until browned on all sides.
- Remove from the heat, lift out the chicken with a slotted spoon, and set aside.
- Quarter and peel the apples, then core and slice them.
- Return the casserole to the heat and add the apples, sugar, spice 2 cups stock, and the bay leaves.
- Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring the apples frequently.
- Return the chicken to the pan, cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until tender, adding more stock if necessary.
- Add the cream and heat through, then taste the sauce for seasoning.
- Serve hot, garnished with apple slices.

TAVERN ON THE GREEN'S MEATLOAF
My friend gave me this recipe and it's a great variation on your ordinary meatloaf. Prep time includes overnight refridgeration.

Steps:
- In a large bowl, beat together the eggs and milk.
- Add the torn bread and let it absorb the liquid for about 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, cook bacon (very crispy but not burnt) until most but not all of the fat is rendered. Drain and set aside to cool.
- Stir the bread mixture with a fork to blend.
- Add the remaining meatloaf ingredients, including the drained bacon, but not the beef, and mix thoroughly.
- Fold in the beef and mix to incorporate throughout, being careful to avoid mashing or overhandling the meat.
- Cover bowl and refrigerate overnight.
- When ready to cook, preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Remove bowl from the refrigerator and shape meat into a loaf approximately 5 inches long and 3 inches high.
- Place in the middle of a low-sided baking pan and bake for 35 minutes.
- In a small bowl, whisk glaze ingredients together.
- Brush meatloaf with glaze and bake for another 20 minutes.
- Remove meat loaf from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
