This is a delicious breakfast treat that I make on special occassions or just because! It is very rich, but is soooo good. The recipe itself is from Sara Lee.

2 eggs
1/4 cup heavy cream or 1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 slices frozen sara lee poundcake, thawed (3/4 inch)
3 tablespoons butter
powdered sugar
maple syrup or fresh fruit

Steps:

  • In medium bowl, whisk together eggs, cream or milk, extracts, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Soak pound cake slices in the mixture, making sure all sides and top are saturated.
  • Soak 5 minutes.
  • Heat butter in large skillet over medium to medium high heat.
  • Fry slices until golden brown, turning once.
  • Dust with powdered sugar, top with either maple syrup (my favorite) or fresh fruit.
  • Enjoy.

Posted in response to a request. Found in an online search. I have to admit, it sounds pretty good.... *making note to self to try this soon* EDITED TO SAY: I made this recipe yesterday to take to an early morning meeting at work. It was quite good and everyone liked it... even folks who don't generally like sweet things. I followed the directions exactly... even beating the batter for exactly 8 minutes. The results weren't "gag me w/ a spoon" sweet, thankfully and, altho buttery, not as buttery as the real thing. I will keep the recipe on file for future "I need to take something breakfast-y" reference.

1 (25 ounce) box yellow cake mix (Duncan Hines, Betty Crocker, or Pillsbury)
1 (3 ounce) box instant vanilla pudding
3/4 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup water
4 eggs
1 tablespoon butter flavor extract
1 tablespoon vanilla
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cinnamon
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon hot milk
1/2 teaspoon butter flavor extract
1/4 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350*.
  • Butter a 9 x 13 baking pan.
  • Beat cake mix, pudding, water, eggs, and oil for 8 minutes at medium speed.
  • Add butter extract and vanilla.
  • Pour 1/2 of mixture in buttered 9 x 13 pan.
  • Mix sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle 1/2 mixture over batter. Spread rest of batter and rest of sugar mixture on top.
  • Swirl knife through. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
  • Drizzle with the following: 1 cup powdered sugar 1 Tbsp hot milk 1/2 tsp butter extract 1/4 tsp vanilla.

An adopted recipe that is based on the copycat version of the original crumb cake. Very easy and quick to make, this didnt last long at our house.

2 cups flour, sifted
2 cups light brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup margarine
1 egg, well beaten
1/2 cup flour, additional
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 cup milk

Steps:

  • Mix sifted flour, sugar and margarine until crumbly.
  • Set aside 1/2 cup of mixture.
  • To the remaining crumb mixture add remaining ingredients as given above.
  • Beat well with mixer on low speed.
  • Spread evenly in a greased 8" square pan.
  • unrinkle reserved crumbs over top and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until golden brown and a inserted toothpick comes out clean.
  • Dust warm cake with powdered sugar before cutting.

Ham and Cheese Croissants -- Just Like Sara Lee - Copycat image

These are Ham Crescent rolls with a melted cream cheese sauce inside. Yum. They stopped selling these in our area a few years ago. I made this recipe when I had some extra cheese and honey ham in the fridge. Got the idea from Pepperoni Crescent recipe #41577. I also want to try these with Roast Beef slices, provolone cheese and maybe some horseradish/dijon or honey mustard. The possibilities are endless. Have fun with this recipe, add any combo you like... just watch the "browning". Also, if you wrap them a little different from the crescent shape, meaning roll the outer point of the dough towards one end of the roll it will look like a mini hot pocket. My kids loved these, and the pepperoni ones, too. Great recipe to get rid of leftover lunchmeat and cheeses. Just buy the crescents and bake!

1 (6 count) package Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls
24 -30 slices hillshire farm deli-sliced honey-roasted ham
1 tablespoon cheddar cheese, shredded
3 -4 tablespoons cream cheese
1 -2 tablespoon butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • On wax paper, or other surface, roll each crescent roll open. *Note* if you don't move quickly, the dough will become sticky on the surface.
  • Top with 4 or 5 "thin" slices of rolled up Honey Ham.
  • Lightly combine cheddar and cream cheese together in bowl.
  • With a butter knife spread about 1/2 tablespoon of cheese mixture between the ham slices.
  • Roll crescents from wide end to narrow point.
  • Place rolls on a cookie sheet.
  • Bake for about 12 minutes.
  • Run a cube of butter lightly over all crescents before cooling.
  • Let cool at least 5 minutes.

1/2 lb butter
2 cups powdered sugar
2 large eggs
3 tablespoons sour cream
1 2/3 cups flour
2 teaspoons lemon extract
1 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325º.
  • Spray 8-1/2" Pyrex loaf dish with Pam. Cream butter with sugar on high speed of mixer for 5 minutes.
  • Add 1 egg and then a little flour, beating 2 minutes.
  • Add 2nd egg and half of remaining flour and beat 2 minutes.
  • Add sour cream, rest of flour and extracts, beating 2 minutes.
  • Spread batter evenly in dish.
  • Bake for 65 minutes or until tester comes out clean.
  • Remove from dish. Slice 1/2" thick.
  • Be sure to slice before freezing loaf.
  • Thaw to use within 6 months.
