WHITE BEANS & RICE

White Beans & Rice image

This recipe was passed down from my Cajun grandmother to me. It makes A LOT of food, and freezes well. I love to make this dish because the aroma that fills my house reminds me of back home. This can be made in a large crockpot, but I recommend a large stewpot as it makes a lot of food.

RED, WHITE AND BLUE CRISPY RICE TREATS

Red, White and Blue Crispy Rice Treats image

These delicious and easy-to-make cereal treats will be the talk of your next Fourth of July party or summer cookout. The different layers are easily achieved with a few drops of food coloring, then the whole pan is topped with a dusting of red, white and blue sprinkles. Cut into squares and serve for a fun and patriotic treat.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     dessert

Time 45m

Yield Makes 16 cereal treats

Number Of Ingredients 7

Nonstick cooking spray, for the baking dish
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into tablespoons
One 10-ounce bag mini marshmallows
5 1/4 cups crispy rice cereal, such as Rice Krispies
1/2 teaspoon blue gel food coloring (see Cook's Note)
1/2 teaspoon red gel food coloring
1/4 cup mixed red, white and blue sprinkles

Steps:

  • Line a 9-by-9-inch baking dish with aluminum foil, leaving a 2-inch overhang on two opposite sides. Spray the foil lightly with cooking spray.
  • Divide the butter and marshmallows among 3 medium microwave-safe bowls (1 tablespoon of butter and about 2 cups of marshmallows per bowl). Microwave 1 bowl until the butter has melted and the marshmallows have puffed, about 60 seconds. Stir in the blue gel food coloring until the mixture is smooth and no streaks of food coloring remain.
  • Working quickly, add 1 3/4 cups of the rice cereal to the bowl and stir with a rubber spatula until evenly coated. Transfer to the prepared baking dish and press into an even, compact layer. (Spray your hands with a little cooking spray to keep them from sticking when pressing the cereal mixture into the pan). Set aside.
  • Microwave another bowl of butter and marshmallows in the same manner. Stir together until smooth and combined (this will be the "white" layer). Stir in another 1 3/4 cups of rice cereal until evenly coated. Place on top of the blue cereal treat layer, pressing until even and compact.
  • Repeat with the remaining bowl of butter and marshmallows, microwaving until melted and smooth. Stir in the red gel food coloring until the mixture is smooth and no streaks of food coloring remain. Add the remaining 1 3/4 cups rice cereal to the bowl and stir until evenly coated. Place on top of the white cereal treat layer, pressing into an even, compact layer. While still warm, top evenly with the sprinkles, pressing gently so they adhere.
  • Let sit at room temperature until firm, about 30 minutes. Cut into 16 squares. Store the cereal treats at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

7 WHITE FOODS — AND WHAT TO EAT INSTEAD - HEALTHLINE

From healthline.com
Estimated Reading Time 8 mins
  • White bread. One of the primary foods eliminated on the No White Foods Diet is white bread, as well as closely related foods made from white flour, including crackers, pastries, and breakfast cereals.
  • White pasta. White pasta is similar to white bread in that it’s made from refined flour that contains fewer total nutrients than the unrefined version.
  • White rice. Like white bread and pasta, white rice falls within the category of refined grains. White rice starts out as a whole grain, but the bran and germ are removed during the milling process, which transforms it into the starchy, fluffy white rice you’re probably quite familiar with.
  • White sugar. It’s unsurprising that the No White Foods Diet eliminates white sugar. Still, most versions of the diet also prohibit more colorful forms of sugar, including brown sugar, honey, turbinado sugar, maple syrup, and agave nectar.
  • Salt. Most people are familiar with table salt as a white food, but it also comes in other colors, such as pink, blue, and black. While some salt is essential for health, many people following Western diets eat entirely too much of it, with the majority coming from ultra-processed foods (8).
  • White potatoes. White potatoes are not inherently unhealthy. In fact, they’re a great source of several important nutrients, such as potassium, vitamin C, and fiber (10).
  • Animal-based fats. Most versions of the No White Foods Diet consider animal-based fats to be white foods and recommend that they’re limited. White animal-based fats primarily refer to fats that come from meat and dairy products, most of which are saturated fats.

7 HEALTH BENEFITS OF RED RICE AND WHY YOU ... - COOKY MOM

From cookymom.com
Estimated Reading Time 7 mins
  • Whole grain and Rich in Fiber. Unlike polished white rice, red rice is unhusked or partially hulled whole grain rice, which means this type of rice also retained the bran, the germ, along with its red husk.
  • Packed with Essential Nutrients. Aside from fiber, this nutty-tasting red rice is a great source of zinc and iron, calcium, magnesium, B vitamins such as vitamin B1 present in the bran, vitamin B2, and B6, manganese, selenium, protein, and potassium.
  • Anthocyanins. The main reason why red rice is red is due to the presence of a flavonoid called anthocyanin. This natural red colorant gives the rice a vibrant red hue and acts as an antioxidant that counteracts free radicals.
  • Lowers Blood Cholesterols. Xuezhikang, a type of red rice, has also been good for people with cardiovascular diseases as it can greatly lower LDL (bad) cholesterol.
  • Good Choice for Diabetics. Red rice and brown rice are better for people with diabetes as they both have a lower glycemic index than white rice. Red rice’s glycemic index is only 55 as compared to standard rice’s glycemic index of 70.
  • Red rice is good for your skin. Who knew it’s not just citrus fruits that contain significant antioxidants that can prevent your wrinkles? Red rice does, too, and it’s all thanks to red rice’s natural pigment coloring.
  • Healthy even for pregnant women. The red yeast rice variety of red rice has been used in Chinese traditional medicine. It is beneficial in lowering your bad cholesterol, but pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as children below 20 years old, are advised not to take in red yeast rice as it is considered a drug because, although rare, some side effects of red yeast rice include: headache, stomachache or bloating, dizziness, heartburn, and muscle aches and weakness that can lead to a rare but serious condition called rhabdomyolysis.
