17 PHILIPPINE FOLK DANCES THAT KEEP THE COUNTRY'S ... - LOVETOKNOW

Author Kelly Roper
  • The Itik-Itik. The Itik-Itik is an iconic dance with steps that mimic the way a duck walks, as well as the way it splashes water on its back to attract a mate.
  • The Tinikling. If you recognize a Filipino dance, it's probably the Tinikling, due in large part to the fact that it's The Philippines' national dance.
  • The Sayaw sa Bangko. The Sayaw sa Bangko would put even the most limber dancers to the test as it's performed on top of a narrow bench. Dancers need keep their balance as they go through a series of movements which include some jaw-dropping acrobatics.
  • The Binasuan. The Binasuan is an entertaining dance that's usually performed at festive social occasions like weddings and birthdays. Dancers carefully balance three half-filled glasses of rice wine on their heads and hands as they gracefully spin and roll on the ground.
  • The Pandanggo sa Ilaw. The Pandanggo sa Ilaw is similar to a Spanish Fandango, though it's performed while balancing three oil lamps — one on the head, and one in each hand.

LIST OF 16 PHILIPPINE FOLK DANCES - CITY DANCE STUDIOS

  • Tinikling – The national dance of the Philippines. The Tinikling folk dance is widely considered the national dance of the Philippines. Its name is heavily tied to a local bird species called tikling and can be directly translated to “performing like tickling”.
  • Cariñosa. With a direct translation as “affectionate” or “loving”, it is easy for us to predict Cariñosa is a dance with a romance theme even when we haven’t watched it.
  • Binasuan. You will hardly find a more colorful and joyful dance than Binasuan in Filipino culture. Let me ask you first: Do you think you can dance while holding your drink without spilling it?
  • Dugso. Unlike many folk dances originating or adapted from foreign countries, Dugso is one of the rare dances that is completely indigenous and unique to Filipino people.
  • Itik-itik. In the Tagalog language, itik means a duck and, to no one’s surprise, Itik-itik is an imitation of a duckling’s movements. Its origin is in the province of Surigao.
