Occupation Food EditorPublished Oct 1, 2022Author Emma Balter
- LBJ loved to rep Texas. As Texans, President Lyndon B. Johnson and First Lady Claudia "Lady Bird" Johnson loved to represent Texas throughout their time in the White House.
- LBJ ate his breakfast in bed. Work-life balance is understandably unattainable for presidents, and Johnson was no exception. Haller writes that he liked to start his day's work at 6 a.m.—
- LBJ ate well while setting Vietnam War policy. When General William C. Westmoreland became Army Chief of Staff, LBJ created a "Tuesday Lunch Group" where the two men, the other chiefs of staff and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara set Vietnam War policy during the weekly luncheon.
- LBJ ate all his vegetables. LBJ's various heart attacks, and the diet changes he made as a result of his health issues, come up often throughout the book, as the White House chefs worked to find lower-carb options.
- LBJ was once roasted for his use of leftovers. Haller writes that the Johnson administration wanted Americans to be more economical, and they used their White House kitchen to set a good example, often repurposing leftovers.
