HOW TO MAKE A WHOLE PITCHER OF MINT JULEPS

How To Make a Whole Pitcher of Mint Juleps image

Provided by Meghan Splawn

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 cup water
1 cup granulated sugar
3 bunches fresh mint leaves, divided
30 ounces Kentucky bourbon (such as Buffalo Trace)
Ice
1 liter sparkling water or club soda, preferably chilled
Powdered sugar (optional)

Steps:

  • Make mint simple syrup: Bring the water and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Submerge 1 cup tightly packed mint leaves in the liquid. Remove the pan from the heat, cover, and infuse for 1 hour. Strain the syrup through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean, lidded jar. Refrigerate if not using immediately.
  • Muddle the mint and mix the cocktail: Drop 1/4 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves into the bottom of a pitcher. Muddle using a wooden spoon to release the mint's essential oils by pressing down and slightly twisting your utensil. The mint should appear bruised but not torn or blackened. Stir in the bourbon and mint simple syrup.
  • Crush the ice: Wrap ice cubes in a clean tea towel. Pound with a rolling pin or meat mallet to crush the ice.
  • Serve: Scoop enough ice into individual julep cups or Old Fashioned glasses until they are very full. Pour in 3 ounces of the bourbon and mint syrup mixture. Top with a splash of sparkling water. Garnish with a sprig of mint and a dusting of powdered sugar, if desired

MINT JULEP

Mint Julep image

Oh, Janice, we didn't like this classic cocktail we loved it. This Mint Julep recipe is definitely not for the faint of heart. It's meant to be sipped so the ice melts while drinking. The simple instructions make preparing this refreshing cocktail at home a cinch. Muddling the mint leaves makes it quite refreshing and mixes...

Provided by Janice Splaha

Categories     Cocktails

Time 5m

Number Of Ingredients 4

10 to 15 mint leaves, muddled
simple syrup (1 part sugar to 1 part water, boiled until sugar dissolves)
2 oz your favorite bourbon
crushed ice... lots of it

Steps:

  • 1. Gather ingredients.
  • 2. Place the mint leaves in the bottom of the cup to muddle. (Don't tear the leaves) Set aside one leaf for garnish.
  • 3. Add 1 ounce of simple syrup. (You may add more or less if you like depending on how sweet you want this.)
  • 4. Add the bourbon.
  • 5. Add crushed ice and stir for about 30 seconds.
  • 6. Add more crushed ice and stir again. The ice will dilute the drink and frost the cup and that's what you want. Garnish with a mint leaf.
  • 7. COOKS NOTE: The proper cup to use is silver or pewter. I believe they can be purchased at your local BEVMO.

MINT JULEPS

Mint Juleps image

Sit on the front porch in your rocking chair on a sultry afternoon and sip on one or two of these. The proper way to serve a mint julep is in a frozen silver goblet, but you can use glasses instead--just use the most elegant ones you have! You can make the syrup ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for whenever the julep mood strikes you.

MINT JULEP - PARTY-SIZE

Mint Julep - Party-Size image

We host a Kentucky Derby Party every year, and have for 10 years. When each guest arrives they are given a real Churchill Downs commemorative mint julep glass to which they then add a self-stick name tag on which they print their name. This serves as their glass, name tag, and souvenir of the party. Many still have one from each year of the party as Churchill Downs produces a new one each year!!!

MINT JULEP PUNCH - THE PERFECT KENTUCKY DERBY DRINK
When I’ve been at Derby parties or anywhere where mint juleps are served, I find a lot of people love the idea of a mint julep, but find them a little strong in the bourbon/mint flavors. They’re pretty, of course, but not everyone’s taste. That’s another reason I love this punch version. It mellows out the intensity yet still has the mint and bourbon flavors.
