MINT JULEP

Mint Julep image

This recipe is from Alton Brown and is the best Mint Julep I've had. It doesn't look like much, but it's very refreshing. The one thing I do is bash the mint and sugar in my mortar/pestle, instead of a glass.

MINT JULEPS

Mint Juleps image

Sit on the front porch in your rocking chair on a sultry afternoon and sip on one or two of these. The proper way to serve a mint julep is in a frozen silver goblet, but you can use glasses instead--just use the most elegant ones you have! You can make the syrup ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for whenever the julep mood strikes you.

DERBY MINT JULEP

Derby Mint Julep image

This Derby-ready julep doubles down on the mint flavor with a bright Mint Simple Syrup and fresh mint leaves. The julep cup is essential to the presentation. This recipe yields about 1 1/4 cups mint simple syrup, enough for 30 cocktails. You can also use it to make a refreshing non-alcoholic drink-add a few tablespoons to club soda and serve over ice.

Provided by Tommy Werner

Categories     Bourbon     Kentucky Derby     Cocktail     Mint     Spring     Drink

Yield 1 cocktail

Number Of Ingredients 9

For the Mint Simple Syrup:
15 mint sprigs (1 bunch)
1 cup raw sugar
For the cocktail:
3 large fresh mint leaves, plus 3 mint sprigs for garnish
2 cups crushed ice, divided
1 1/2 ounces 100-proof bourbon (such as Four Roses), divided
Special equipment:
12-ounce julep cup

Steps:

  • Make the Mint Simple Syrup:
  • Combine mint, sugar, and 1 cup water in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes. Let cool to room temperature. Using a fine-mesh sieve or a colander lined with cheesecloth, strain mixture into a heatproof container and chill at least 25 minutes.
  • Make the cocktail:
  • Using your hands, lightly slap mint leaves, being careful not to bruise them, and place in a julep cup. Add 1/3 cup ice, then 2 tsp. Mint Simple Syrup. Pack another 1/3 cup ice on top. Add 1 oz. bourbon and stir. Add another 1/3 cup ice and remaining 1/2 oz. bourbon. Top with remaining 1 cup ice, tightly packing into a dome. Insert a straw into ice and garnish with mint sprigs.
  • Do Ahead
  • The Mint Simple Syrup can be made up to 5 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator.

MINT JULEP

Categories     Bourbon     Alcoholic     Cocktail Party     Kentucky Derby     Cocktail     Mint     Spirit     Party     Gourmet     Drink

Yield Makes about 1 1/4 cups syrup, or enough for about 10 juleps.

Number Of Ingredients 4

3/4 cup sugar
2 cups chopped fresh mint sprigs plus additional whole sprigs for garnish
crushed ice
1 1/2 ounces (1 jigger) bourbon, or to taste, per julep

Steps:

  • In a saucepan combine the sugar and 3/4 cup water and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Remove the pan from the heat, stir in the chopped mint, and let the mixture stand for at least 2 hours and up to 4 hours. Strain the syrup through a fine sieve into a jar or small bowl, pressing hard on the solids, discard the solids, and let the syrup cool. The syrup may be made 2 weeks in advance and kept covered and chilled. (The syrup will darken but this will not affect the taste.)
  • For each julep fill a silver julep cup or 10-ounce glass with some of the ice, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of the mint syrup, or to taste, and 1 1/2 ounces bourbon, and stir the julep or holding the cup at the rim rotate it back and forth very rapidly. (A frost will form on the outside of a silver cup.) Garnish each julep with 1 of the additional mint sprigs.
