An old favorite, this recipe is based on vodka and flavored with anise, peppermint and ginger.

8 whole cloves
1 teaspoon chopped crystallized ginger
4 cups white sugar
12 drops peppermint extract
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon anise extract
15 drops yellow food coloring
2 (750 milliliter) bottles vodka

Steps:

  • Place the cloves and ginger in a small jar and add enough vodka to cover. Seal and soak for 3 days. NO MORE! Strain the liquid, discarding the solids.
  • Measure the sugar into a gallon container. Add the peppermint, vanilla and anise extracts as well as the food coloring. Pour in the vodka, the strained vodka and yellow food coloring. Cover tightly and shake until the sugar dissolves. Age for one week MINIMUM.

From my copycat e-cookbook, I wanted to share this one because I remember learning about this elusive liquer in bartending school. I've had to cut sugar and alcohol as a result of my training lately, but I'll let the adventurous types have fun with this if you happen to want it for a party or have an acquired taste for it. :) The massive cook time is the fermentation time of about 10 days - 2 weeks.

2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1/4 teaspoon anise extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 drops yellow food coloring
1 fifth vodka

Steps:

  • Make a sugar syrup by combining the sugar and water in a heavy saucepan and bringing to a boil for about a minute, then immediately reduce the heat.
  • Simmer for 1 hour or until thickened. Remove from heat and cool.
  • Pour the sugar syrup into a sterilized quart size bottle. Add the anise extract, vanilla, and food coloring.
  • Stir gently and add the vodka.
  • Cover and let the mixture sit for 10-14 days before serving.

This is very simailar to "the real stuff". It does call for glycerine. In the 90's, when I lived in the states, you could buy glycerine at the drug stores. I don't know if you still can find it there. Galliano is a "must" in Harvey Wallbangers! Yield: approximate. I don't know where this recipe comes from.

3 3/4 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon glycerine
2 teaspoons anise extract
2 teaspoons banana extract
1 teaspoon lemon extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
7 drops yellow food coloring
2 cups 100 proof vodka

Steps:

  • Bring to a rolling boil, the first three ingredients.
  • Cool until lukewarm, then add remaining ingredients.
  • Mix and pour into bottles.
  • Keep in cool, dry place.

Since it's out in the country there are no street lights. So if you can imagine dancing cheek to cheek with your honey surrounded by thousands of fireflies-- well, it's really dreamy! And what's Bewitched got to do with it? Well all the recipes are named after Bewitched characters. Hmmm...I think I'll have to post a Harvey Wallbanger cake, too! *****Established towards the end of the 19th century, Galliano, (also known as Liquore Galliano) is a sweet, yellow Italian herbal liqueur. Named after Italian-Abyssianian military war hero, Major Giuseppe Falliano, Galliano is flavored with various herbs, flowers and spices, including anise, licorice and vanilla, giving it an unique taste. Its popularity is associated with the Harvey Wallbanger. From this has sprung a huge demand for Galliano as a straight liqueur, in mixed drinks and for cooking.

1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup Galliano, herbal liquor
1 cup warm water
2 egg whites, beaten stiff
2 lbs fresh shrimp, shelled and deveined and towel dried
vegetable oil, for deep-frying
1 pint yogurt
2 tablespoons scallions, green and white part sliced thin
1 celery, sliced thin
2 teaspoons dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup Galliano

Steps:

  • Sauce:.
  • Combine all sauce ingredients together. Chill 4 hours.
  • Shrimp:
  • Preheat oven to 250 degrees to hold fried shrimp.
  • Heat 3 to 4 inches of vegetable oil into a large saucepan.
  • Blend together first 4 ingredients. Add next 2 ingredients.
  • Just before frying shrimp, fold egg whites into batter.
  • Coat shrimp with batter.
  • When oil reaches 350 degrees on deep-fat thermometer, add shrimp, be sure not to overcrowd. When shrimp are golden brown, remove from oil.
  • Drain on paper towel then transfer to warm oven. Continue with remaining shrimp.
  • Serve with sauce.
