HOBO'S
These were a regular in our rotation when I was growing up. The first time we made these, my grandpa commented that he didn't know of any hobo that would eat so well.

Steps:
- Make 4 patties out of ground chuck.
- Place patty in the middle of a piece of aluminum foil. (make foil big enough to come back up to the middle of the patty and to go around the veggies).
- Sprinkle with garlic salt or garlic powder and pepper.
- Stack veggies on top of burger patty, starting with potatoes.
- Follow by onion slices.
- Follow with carrots and green beans.
- Pull foil up to middle and gather at the top and twist closed. (try to make sure no areas are open on the side for easier clean-up).
- Place in 375°F oven on cookie sheet or directly on oven racks if you are certain, all areas are closed up for 1 hour or until patties are cooked through.
- Once cooked, open foil packet and sprinkle cheese on top.
- Leaving foil packet open, place back in oven long enough to just melt the cheese.
- No need for sides, the whole meal is in the packet!
- Can be cooked on the BBQ grill or campfire also.
TUNA HOBOS
This is a marvelous tasting hot sandwich with a convenient make-ahead feature. Prepare the sandwiches early and wrap them in foil; bake just before eating. They do require baking; the crockpot or microwave just won't give the same results. Recipe doubles or triples easily. It came from Family Circle magazine about 35 years ago.

- Remember the differences between hobos, tramps, and bums: hobos are people who travel and look for work, tramps are people who travel and don't look for work, bums are people who neither travel nor look for work.
- Take stock of your skills and experience. Historically, hobos have made their living from manual labor, but that doesn't always have to be the case. Any skill that is in wide demand and does not require an extended time commitment can be useful to a hobo.
- Establish Plan B. This is a serious, life-altering decision. Don't abandon everything suddenly and disappear. You need something to come back to if your life on the road doesn't work out.
- Be prepared. You may like the romantic idea of leaving with nothing but the clothes on your back and whatever is in your wallet, but that is a sure-fire recipe for disaster.
- Make a list of connections. Look at maps of the areas in which you'll be traveling, and determine whether or not there's anyone you know, directly or indirectly, who lives there.
- Make an itinerary based on the type of work you plan to do, the connections you have in place, and the places you'd like to see. Do as much research as you can beforehand.
- Learn the hobo code. Historically hobos relied on a shared system of symbols that let fellow travelers know more about their current environment. The symbols can vary from place to place and may no longer be used in many areas.
- Hit the road! Leave your roots behind. Find a place to live and work from day to day. See the sights of each new place you visit. Make interesting friends (you never know when they might lend a helping hand).
- Don't hesitate to dumpster dive. You wouldn't believe the amount of free undamaged food that is thrown away all the time. For the best results check behind smaller grocery stores and fruit markets, as they usually don't invest money in a sealed garbage compactor (although these can sometimes be opened as well)—just be careful.
