- The water is too hot or too cold. Not all water heating problems result in cold water. Sometimes, the water can heat up too hot. The most common reason for this is an accidental knock to the thermostat or because it was changed and forgotten.
- The water heater is leaking. If you notice leaks from your hot water heater, it can be alarming. Water may start to pool near the unit or drip from the pipes.
- The burner assembly is damaged. A water heater relies on a clean and functional burner or “thermocouple” to heat the water. Therefore, it is an obvious place to look if you can’t get any hot water from your system.
- The water is smelly or discoloured. Sometimes, hot water problems are not about the temperature but the appearance or smell of the water. This problem can affect all or some of the faucets in the house and the issue may only be present when the water is first turned on.
- Noise emitted by the heater. Sometimes, a noisy water heater can be unsettling for homeowners. It does not usually point to a major problem and is most likely due to the buildup of limescale and sediment from the hard water.

- Water Heater No hot water. If you have no hot water, there are several possible reasons, and you need to work through each of them methodically to eliminate each one – and this will also depend on whether you have an electric or gas-powered heater.
- Water Heater Not enough hot water or water not hot enough. Again, if you don’t have enough hot water, the reason why will depend on the type of heater you have.
- Water too hot. This is almost certainly due to the thermostat being set too high, but it’s an easy problem to resolve. Simply turn down the thermostat and you should be good to go.
- Water Heater takes too long to heat. Possible reasons for water taking a long time to heat include faulty heating elements, sediment build-up on the elements and a faulty thermostat.
- Low water pressure in Water Heater. Low water pressure is often caused by not having wide enough pipes. Older homes mostly have ½” pipes while modern homes usually use ¾” pipes.
