12 GENIUS IDEAS TO THROW THE PERFECT FRIENDSGIVING
From mydomaine.com
Estimated Reading Time 8 mins
- Throw a Pie and Sides Potluck. "A potluck is probably the most obvious and unexciting option but it does make things easier for you," he says. "It gives you the two-fold benefit of having less food to prepare while giving your guests some parameters on what to bring without being too specific."
- Try a Friends "ThanksChristmas" "Hear me out: A friend of mine used to do this in college and it was so brilliant," Lofts continues. "Friendsgiving celebrations generally fall during the week before or after the Thanksgiving holiday since most of us are with family on the big day.
- Keep it Casual. "Why ask your friends to put on dresses and high heels when they can just roll out of bed and head over in their slippers?" he asks. "Better yet, you can turn this into a surprise.
- Or Just Have Pies and Thighs. "The thigh is what's up with all manner of fowl," Lofts says. "Alright, I'll make an exception for duck breasts, but only because of that crispy, fatty skin.
- Make It a Game Night. "Games are fun, especially with friends," Lofts says. "Have a range of games, including physical activity games like Twister and card games like Cards Against Humanity to really get the room rolling with laughter."
- Devise a Menu and a Schedule. "Make a menu with lots of things you can make ahead, then plan ahead," he says. "Write out a shopping and prep list and note when each item on the prep list should be completed."
- Check for Food Allergies. "There are bound to be a few, but some people are shy about speaking up," Lofts says. "No matter what, I always like to make at least one dish vegetarian and one gluten-free."
- Shop in Advance. "Decide on the menu at least a week before the party, then go out and shop right away for the pantry items, booze, and other non-perishables," he notes.
- Mix Store-Bought and Homemade. "Everything from scratch is admirable, maybe even aspirational, but let's be real with ourselves," he says. "I will proudly pour olives from a jar into a bowl, or a favorite store-bought pepper jelly over a block of cream cheese with some Ritz crackers on the side.
- Have Lots of Ice. "Store it in freezer bags," he says. "The ice machine will never keep up with your thirsty friends."

- Eat Drink & Be Thankful, from Punch Bowl: This invitation is as cozy as a flannel blanket. It’s a great option if you want something traditional, homey, and not at all uptight or staid.
- Feast Mode, from Evite: You know everybody is going to rush through dinner to watch football, and you wouldn’t have it any other way. You grew up tailgating and some of those family recipes are definitely going to be served at your Friendsgiving.
- Food and Friends, from Minted: No one ever accuses you of beating around the bush. You get straight to the point and you want an invitation that does the same.
- Tasty Bites, from Evite: Use this invitation if your potluck will involve a cheese board, more than two pies, and/or kabocha squash. You’ve been planning this menu for months and this invitation helps illustrate that.
- Friendsgiving Floral, from Minted: You believe every dinner party should be fancy, and even though this is a Friendsgiving, you still intend to break out linen napkins, place cards, and the nicest serving platters you have.
- Shabby Square, from Greetings Island: Right now you’re having an absolute meltdown because you can’t decide if it’s more elegantly careless to serve Trader Joe’s cranberry orange sauce, or the jellied Ocean Spray one that comes out in the shape of the can.
6 COMPLETELY ADORABLE FRIENDSGIVING IDEAS - PUNCHBOWL
From punchbowl.com
- Friendsgiving Party Activity: Before you sit down to eat, ask everyone to write the name of a person not present who they are thankful for. Pass out small pieces of heart-shaped brown craft paper.
- Send Free Friendsgiving Invitations: While an email or a text will get the word out about your Friendsgiving dinner, it's always nice to get guests excited with a proper invitation.
- Host a Friendsgiving Brunch: Having trouble finding a date that works? November is a busy month! Host a Friendsgiving brunch instead. It’s a more casual occasion than a sit-down dinner, and may fit into busy schedules a little better.
- Serve a Signature Cocktail: Nothing gets good conversation started faster than a festive beverage. We love this delicious Pumpkini Recipe that you can easily make for your own Friendsgiving cocktail.
- Have a Pumpkin Pie-Off: Challenge your friends to a pumpkin pie baking contest. This is especially great if you've got several bakers in your group. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to test their recipes before Turkey Day with their families, and it makes for a plentiful dessert spread!
- Set Up a Thanksgiving Craft Table: Does anyone really ever stop missing elementary school craft projects? Set out a few art supplies and let everyone release a little creative energy.

From eatthis.com
- An Impressive Cheese Board. When it comes to Friendsgiving food ideas for those of us who want to avoid cooking at all costs, there's nothing better to bring than a cheese board.
- The Sparkling Wine to Toast. No holiday meal, or gathering with friends, is complete without a little bubbly, and if you're a little hesitant in the kitchen or are hopping from one party to the next, picking up a few bottles is your best bet.
- The Dip Everyone Will Be Obsessed With. You'll win the holiday with this super easy but so impressive smoked salmon dip from Eating Bird Food. It only takes four ingredients: the salmon, red onion, dill, and cream cheese (or almond milk cream cheese to make the recipe dairy-free), which can all be popped in your food processor, pulsed, and brought along right to the party in a plastic container.
- Your Go-To Festive Punch. Your fellow Friendsgiving goers may want to skip the wines and go straight to the hard stuff, and in that case, this is the perfect recipe: a cocktail that tastes exactly like fall and looks almost too pretty to drink.
- Savory Bread that Beats Store-Bought. You can really make an impression on your friends by baking your own bread rather than stopping at the bakery. This spiced pumpkin beer bread recipe from Savory Simple incorporates festive pumpkin ale (which you probably have in the house already this time of year).
- The Soup Warm-up Course. Many people serve a light, steamy soup to kick off the Thanksgiving meal, so why not bring it to Friendsgiving? You can prepare this cream of chicken soup from Paint the Kitchen Red right in your Instant Pot before bringing it along to the party.
- A Revamped Caprese Salad. No one wants to eat a simple green salad when there's so much color already on the table, so if you've been assigned a tossed salad, surprise your friends with a riff on a Caprese salad made with an interesting Japanese fruit: persimmon.
- A Hearty Vegan Side. Thanksgiving can be the most challenging holiday of the year to eat vegan, so you have to get strategic in the kind of dishes you make.
- The Main Wine. A solid wine that pairs with turkey, or any holiday main dish, is essential to the Friendsgiving experience. Ideally, you want to choose something versatile, like a red blend, which is perfect for that warmth and body you crave with your holiday meal, and offers a unique mix of something for everyone.
- Turkey with a Twist. If you've been tasked with the turkey this year, take a breath. The easiest way to tackle it and make sure the whole bird cooks evenly is spatchcocking, Stephanie Le of iamafoodblog says.

- Crockpot Turkey Breasts. Cooking a Thanksgiving turkey to perfection is enough to strike fear into the hearts of many a chef. And don’t even mention the amount of time it takes to prepare, baste, stuff and cook the bird.
- Roasted Chicken. Roasting a chicken is much easier than most people think and a great alternative to a serving a whole turkey on Friendsgiving. Simply brush the skin with some olive oil, sprinkle it with spice and fresh herbs and place in the oven to cook for the recommended period relative to the size of the bird.
- Honey Baked Ham. Instead of making turkey, let your guest enjoy a honey baked ham. I think this is actually one of the better options for the main course at Friendsgiving so they can enjoy turkey on Thanksgiving with their family.
- 5-Minute Gravy. You can’t enjoy your turkey, chicken or ham without gravy. I mean gravy just makes everything taste better because it’s just so flavorful.
- Green Bean Casserole. Oh yes, nothing says Friendsgiving than green bean casserole. I make a mean green bean casserole too! I’ve never been to a Friendsgiving without it.
- Jalapeno Cornbread. Like I mentioned earlier, Friendsgiving is the perfect time to experiment and put a twist on classic Thanksgiving recipes because your friends can give you honest feedback.
- Mashed Potatoes. Mashed potatoes are one of those dishes that are easy to prepare but like so many simple dishes, can go horribly wrong. Buy potatoes that are specifically cultivated for mashing.
- Stuffing. Stuffing it’s the first thing that should be adding to your Friendsgiving food ideas list. Just like Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving wouldn’t be complete without it.
- Sweet Potato Casserole. It’s true when they say the best food comes in a casserole dish. Sweet potato casserole is another one of my favorite dishes that I often go back for seconds (or thirds, haha).
- Honey-glazed Carrots. This is a very traditional dish and you will probably find that your grandma has a recipe stashed away somewhere. It only takes a few minutes to lightly boil (or steam) some peeled, baby carrots and strain them.
