- Frog Legs in France. A slight shiver ran through my spine. I took one bite. I was done. I just couldn’t get past the rest and the idea of what this once was.
- Hormigas Culonas Big Butt Ants in Colombia. When you hear about big butts in Colombia, the first thing that comes to mind probably aren’t ants. Once you take your mind out of the gutter, you’ll realize that hormigas culonas (literally big butt ants) are a regional delicacy in the Santander region of Colombia.
- Maggot Cheese in Sardinia Italy. Once the eggs open, the larvae start feeding and the cheese is eaten while the larvae are still alive. When it comes to Sardinian food nothing is weirder than casu marzu – literally “rotten cheese.”
- Sannakji Live Octopus in Korea. The experience of eating live octopus is like going into battle with your food. Of all the adventurous foods we’ve tried, nothing could prepare us for our first Sannakji experience.
- Locust Bugs in Myanmar. I can honestly say it was the grossest food I’ve ever put in my mouth. If you’ve ever watched the TV show I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, you’ll have seen people in the Australian jungle munching their way through a variety of different insects.
- Bird Embryo Balut Egg in Philippines. As I chewed the soft bones and the soft feathers of the balut egg, I began to imagine every part of the embryo, from its beak to its claws.
- Basashi Raw Horse Meat in Japan. In Japan I got to try many very strange dishes such as raw horse meat and cod sperm which looks like human brain. Japan has one of the most delicious cuisines in the world.
- Cuy Guinea Pig in Ecuador. It still looked remarkably like a guinea pig and I could see its little teeth at the front of its mouth. I won’t lie, I was a little conflicted about eating guinea pig during my visit to Cuenca, Ecuador.
- Morcilla blood sausage in Spain. Morcilla is made with cooked pork blood and then left to dry. It looks like a normal sausage, but it’s very dark, almost black in color.
- Giant Ant Eggs & Raspberry in Luang Prabang. they “explode” when you bite down on them and release their creamy liquid interior. I’ve had my fair share of insects while traveling South East Asia, but by far the most creative insect dish was a giant ant egg and raspberry sorbet, created by a Lao chef in Luang Prabang.

- Soursop. This prickly fruit might not look like the sexiest fruit, but its flavour packs and punch making it extremely “moreish”. The Fijian soursop grows in abundance between June and September, so look out for them at the Fijian produce markets during this time.
- Fijian Mangos. So it’s highly likely that you are well-versed with the mango, but with mangos growing pretty much everywhere in Fiji, it’s a fruit you have to try!
- Papaya (Pawpaw) Admittedly, papaya, or commonly known as pawpaw, is not native to Fiji but has become a staple of the Fijian diet. The climate here is ideal for growing smooth and sweet pawpaw, which is often served as a breakfast fruit or with dessert.
- Rambutan. One of the crazier-looking fruits in Fiji, rambutan looks like food from another planet, let alone an isolated group of islands. Within its red and green furry skin lies a jelly-like flesh tasting similar to a grape with a slight citrus edge.
- Dragon Fruit. Successfully grown in dense, humid and high temperatures, dragon fruit grows in Fiji during the wet season (summer). It’s another fruit with an odd appearance, usually bright pink with wide spines and white flesh with scattered seeds.
- Guava. While guava is found in many tropical locations across the world, many people try it first in Fiji. The flavour is sweet but subtle, often compared to the taste of apple, pear and strawberries.
- Pineapple. Ok, so the pineapple is nothing new to most of you, but wait until you try the pineapples in Fiji! Pineapples in Fiji are usually a lot smaller than pineapples that are exported overseas, allowing a more concentrated flavour and juice.
- Bananas. Far from your large manicured bananas found in the supermarkets at home, bananas in Fiji come in many different varieties and are packed with flavour!
- Coconut. Yes, we know, a coconut is not a fruit, but it’s used so much in daily life and cooking that we simply can’t miss it out here. Coconuts have a huge variety of uses in Fiji, which is best explained by attending a coconut demonstration put on by many of the resorts – see 10 Best Foodie Experiences in Fiji.
- Passion Fruit. Last but certainly not least, the passion fruit is a must-try in Fiji. While it is gaining popularity outside of the tropics, passion fruit still often confuses people when they see its gooey inside.

- Durian. Durian is a large, spiky fruit native to Southeast Asia. It’s famous for its pungent aroma and savory smell that is sometimes described as fried onions While foreigners often have a tough time stomaching the smell, it’s much loved in many parts of Asia.
- Jackfruit. Jackfruit is native to Southeast Asia. It’s the largest tree-borne fruit in the world and can sometimes grow up to 80 lb in weight. The starchy fruit has a subtle sweetness and apple/banana flavor.
- Dragon Fruit (White Pitaya) Colorful red and green cactus fruit with white flesh spotted with tiny black seeds, similar in texture to a kiwifruit. While the appearance is dramatic, the flavor was surprisingly subtle.
- Cherimoya. Cherimoya was one of the most popular new discoveries at our FruitCrawl. The fruit, native to South America is filled with a soft, custard-like white flesh that gives it the nickname “custard apple.”
- Kiwano (Horned Melon) Kiwano is a beautiful and otherworldly-looking fruit that is native to Sub-Saharan Africa. The fruit has bright orange spiky skin filled with yellow and green seeds.
- Korean Melon. A small yellow melon with deep white stripes and white interior flesh with small, edible white seeds. The fruit tastes like a cross between honeydew and cucumber with the crisp texture of a cucumber.
- Passion Fruit. Small, golf-ball sized red or yellow fruit with hard skin and tart, jucy seeds that you can scoop out with a spoon. Passion fruit is native to South America, but it’s now grown around the world.
- Feijoa (Pineapple Guava) This fruit was another one of the most popular new discoveries at #FruitCrawl. Feijoa is a small elliptical fruit with tart, slightly gritty flesh that you can scoop out with a spoon.
- Tamarillo (Tree Tomato) An egg-shaped fruit with a tart, astringent, and pulpy flesh that you can scoop out with a spoon. The tamarillo is native to South America.
- Loquat. Loquats are a small, pear-shaped orange fruit with large seeds. It tastes like a combination of peach and mango. Where to find it: Forage it! They are a common ornamental tree in California and you’ll find them ripe in the spring.
