Steps:
- In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the sugar and 1/2 cup (120 ml) water and bring to a low boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Add the blueberries and reduce the heat to a simmer. Use a wooden spoon to crush the berries, allowing their juices to release, and continue to simmer for 20 minutes. Press the berry mixture through a fine-mesh sieve set over a bowl and discard the solids.
- In a blender, combine the berry syrup, rum, and lime juice. Add the ice and blend until smooth. Serve immediately.
DRUNKEN WATERMELON
Steps:
- With a knife, shave off the stem end of the watermelon, just enough so that it sits flat. Cut the top off the watermelon, about 3 inches down. Scoop out half of the watermelon with a melon baller and set aside
- Scoop out remaining watermelon, leaving the rind-bowl. This will be your punch bowl. Transfer scooped out melon (not the melon balls) to a blender and puree; may be done in batches. Push watermelon puree through a strainer to remove pulp and any seeds. Return watermelon water to the watermelon punch bowl. Stir in tequila, triple sec, and melon balls. Top off with lemon-lime soda. Serve cold over ice.
DRUNKEN BERRIES
Beautiful summer dessert using fresh berries and a splash of pear liqueur. Enjoy a la carte or a la mode. Exceptionally lovely on the Fourth of July. Serve berries by themselves or over vanilla gelato, with a small amount of excess liquid - but it should not be a berry soup.

BLUEBERRY VODKA MARTINIS
These blueberry martinis are the hit of any party! Easy to make, but the key is the homemade blueberry vodka that requires 2 weeks to properly infuse. After that, it's smooth and fruity sailing with a splash of lime juice!

Steps:
- To make the blueberry vodka: Pour out approximately 1/3 of the bottle of vodka into a holding container; set aside. Score each blueberry with a small nick and place into vodka bottle. With the vodka previously set aside, fill the vodka bottle until just below the neck. Add just enough raspberry liqueur to top off the bottle. Let sit in a dark place for 2 weeks.
- To make martinis: In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine 2 parts blueberry vodka, 1 part raspberry liqueur, and a dash of lime juice. Shake vigorously and strain into glass. Garnish with twist of lime zest.

BLACKBERRY MARTINIS
One of the most exquisite exploitations of the blackberry is accomplished by teaming it with a little booze and presenting it in a sugar-rimmed martini glass, making what might be called a blacktini. The original recipe, from ''The Berry Bible,'' suggests vodka, but I find the complexity of the drink enhanced by the gin's juniper-berry accent. I think vodka is dull, actually, but if you like it (most of America seems to), go with God.

- In a food processor, purée the berries, brandy and remaining tablespoon sugar until smooth.

DRUNKEN BLUEBERRIES (BLUEBERRY MARTINIS)
Very good friends of ours have a blueberry farm and every year we are fortunate to get flats of fresh blueberries. I am always looking for new and exciting recipes for these beauties. This recipe was originally used for ice cream, but my DH got the brilliant idea to use the vodka in Blueberry Martinis. Word of caution, these berries are very, very potent once they have fully matured and end up having a delightful crunch to the berry. Raspberries and blackberries could be substituted for the blueberry. My dear 88 year old MIL used to just love these and just couldn't understand why we had to ration these out for her!!!

Steps:
- Syrup: Heat vodka and sugar mix until sugar dissolves. (careful not to cook to long or the alchol evaporates).
- Steralize canning jars and lids. Fill hot jars full of blueberries -- then pour sugar-vodka mixture over it to the top. Wipe lid clean, then seal.
- Set sit in fridge for 3 months -- turning jars over every 3 - 4 days.
- Serve over ice cream or use in martinis.
- One recipe equals 2-1/4 quarts jars. Multiply the recipe by 4 and you will get 7 quarts. If kept refrigerated, I have had these last for 4 - 5 years. Works well with raspberries and blackberries.
