  • Gather all the needed items. Whenever you are getting into completing a project the very first thing you should be doing is to make a plan of how exactly are you going to complete the project and what things you will be needing.
  • Start Sanding the Wood. Once you have gathered all the needed items. Now choose a place that is well ventilated and if you will be staining the wood inside a room then make sure to put paper or plastic on the ground so that you will be able to gather the dust.
  • Cleaning the Wood Thoroughly. When you are done with the sanding, you would want to get rid of the dust that sanding produced. If the wood piece is small, then wipe clean the wood.
  • Clean with Water. Once you have cleaned the surface, clean the wood with water. Make the wood wet. Do not even use a pressure washer on bare wood, it might clean the wood properly but it will damage the wood.
  • Conditioning the Wood. If you see that the wood grain has raise a little, that means that wood is not ready for staining. But before that, you will have to do the conditioning.

10 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STAINING YOUR CEDAR - SUMMERSTYLE

From summerstyle.summerwood.com
  • Three choices for staining. When it comes to staining your cedar, you have three choices: natural, semi -transparent, and coloured or opaque. Consider whether you want your building to look untouched or add a pop of colour to your yard before choosing.
  • Transparent stains have water-repellent features. Cedar is known to age gracefully to a soft, silver-grey patina, but it’s wise to keep the rich tones of your cedar siding lasting longer.
  • Offer up a hint of colour. Semi-transparent stains offer up a hint of colour. They still represent the wood beautifully but give it a little boost. Grains and knots in your wood will be modified, not enough to take away from its natural qualities though!
  • Coloured/Opaque finishes add a little charm. Coloured/opaque finishes allow you to have fun with your finished product. If you want to go for a dramatic look, or maybe add a little extra charm, this may be the way to go.
  • The sooner you treat your cedar, the better. Once you’ve decided on your finish it’s best to get to work quickly.
