CORPSE REVIVER NO. 1

Corpse Reviver No. 1 image

This cocktail gets less love than its more popular sibling, the Corpse Reviver No. 2, but that shouldn't be the case: the No. 1 is exceptionally elegant. The warmth of the brandy and the apple flavor of the Calvados combine to make it a natural for autumn drinking, but I wouldn't turn it down any other time of year.

Provided by Rosie Schaap

Yield 1 drink

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 1/2 oz. brandy
3/4 oz. Calvados
3/4 oz. sweet Italian vermouth

Steps:

  • Chill a coupe glass. Stir all ingredients with ice in a mixing glass. Strain into coupe.

Well-balanced with zesty lemon and absinthe just shining through. We've cheekily added the merest dash of sugar but depending on your personal tastes, citrus juice and triple sec you may want to omit this. Harry originally stipulated Kina Lillet - as this is no longer available we've used Lillet Blanc but you can also use dry vermouth or preferably a kina aromatised-wine.

CORPSE REVIVER #2 CLASSIC COCKTAIL RECIPE

Corpse Reviver #2 Classic Cocktail Recipe image

Mentions of this cocktail date from 1861, but the Corpse Reviver #2 hasn't lost any of its luster. Mixed in equal parts, it's easy to make at home.

Provided by Dlan Garret

Categories     Cocktail Recipes, Drinks

Number Of Ingredients 6

¾ ounce gin
¾ ounce lemon juice
¾ ounce Cointreau
¾ Cocchi Americano
1 dash absinthe
Orange peel, for garnish

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until well chilled. Double strain (strain from shaker through additional fine mesh strainer) into chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass. Garnish with orange peel. Note: If a less anise-forward flavor is desired, absinthe can be used to rinse the glass (swirled until the interior is coated and then discarded), rather than shaken with the other ingredients. And if you'd like a lighter cocktail, Lillet Blanc can be substituted for Cocchi Americano.

CORPSE REVIVER COCKTAILS - RECIPES AND HISTORY
As the name alludes to, The Corpse Reviver is one of a category of 'pick-me-up' cocktails that were prescribed by bar keeps of old to revive those souls that appeared in their bar feeling worse the wear from over indulgence in the same place the night before. Perhaps more a 'kill or cure' than 'a hangover cure', this category of cocktail emerged in the mid-1800s.
