- To carve melon bowl, cut off top 1/4 of melon. Being careful not to cut through to melon, cut thin slice from bottom of melon so it will sit flat. Scoop out watermelon, leaving 1/2- to 1-inch-thick shell.
- Carve watermelon as shown in steps on right. Wrap melon bowl in plastic wrap to keep moist; refrigerate until ready to fill. At serving time, fill with cut-up fruit.

- This Watermelon Fruit Basket Is Impressive But Simple. Watermelon fruit bowls are perfect for summer events because they look so beautiful on a barbecue or cookout food spread.
- Make the Bottom Flat. With a large sharp knife, cut a very thin slice from either long side of the melon. Making the bottom flat will allow the melon to sit upright without wobbling.
- Cut off the Top. Place the watermelon on it's cut side. Place the knife about 1 inch to the left of the center and slice the melon completely through.
- Scoop out the Center. Use a melon-baller to remove edible watermelon pulp and reserve for fruit salad or other use. you can also carve out the melon with a regular knife or scoop it out with a spoon.
- Carve the Edge. Carve evenly-spaced V-shaped notches around the top edge of the watermelon bowl. Have them connect to form the zigzag shape at the top.
- Fill Your Bowl. Fill the finished bowl with fruit salad or dip. You can use this method on other melons such as cantaloupe, honeydew, Crenshaw melon, etc.

- Purchase a watermelon. Choose the shape according to what you'd prefer to see placed on the table.
- Cut a thin slice from the bottom of the whole watermelon. This will stabilize the melon and prevent it from toppling over. When you've finished carving, place the swan basket onto a serving plate to protect surfaces the swan is placed on.
- Draw the outlines for the swan. Draw the design on the watermelon rind using a fine to medium point waterproof marker or a sharp pencil.
- Use a sharp knife or a food decorating tool to cut along the lines of the pattern as shown here. Cut all the way through the rind when cutting the top portion of the swan design.
- Use care to leave the beak attached to the feathers when carving it in. This is essential for the stability of the design.
- Use a knife to hollow out an eye. This is best done before removing the top flesh because it's a delicate cut and the weight of all the melon still in place will help you to get it right.
- Remove the top section of the watermelon. Cut it into quarters, then gently pulling the pieces apart one by one. Keep an eye out for any attached parts that need a bit more cutting to release the melon rind and flesh.
- Fill the watermelon swan with 1 cup of melon balls and grapes, or any other fruit being used. The exact amount will depend on the size of the melon – you may be able to fit more or less than one cup.
