9 WEIRD FOODS PEOPLE ATE TO SURVIVE DURING WWII | BY ESH | THE

From medium.com
  • Braised Beef Tongue. You might not imagine families sitting down to enjoy something huge rubbery and tough — a cow’s tongue. But during the deadly war, there were limited meat products that one could buy, including cow’s tongue and feet.
  • Bean Cake. Have you tried baking without flour? Sounds impossible? It is not. People, especially in Poland, used beans instead of flour when the staple was scarce.
  • Onions Stuffed With Grape-Nuts. America had plentiful vegetables in WW2, which could not be exported overseas without getting spoiled; thus, Americans were asked to fill up on the veggies.
  • Roosevelt Coffee. People cannot survive easily without coffee. Similar was the case back then during WW2, but the must-have coffee was also rationed. Every coffee bean in America was shipped overseas, resulting in limited consumption per person.
  • Wartime Sponge Cake. You might know that sponge cake has been around for quite a few centuries — since the renaissance. The delicious delicacy is simply easy to make with key ingredients sugar, flour, eggs, and butter.
  • Potato Flour Sour Cream. About eighteen percent of Poland perished during the deadly war. Germans took away the Polish lands, leaving them in a compromising condition regarding the menu.
  • Mock Fish Fillets. English needed a sense of normalcy during the war. Thus, the cooks engaged their brain cells in crafting some best recipes they possibly could.
  • Economy Loaf. Meat’s demand was skyrocketing during WW2. Front line soldiers received most of the meat, forcing people back home to find interesting new recipes.
  • Bubble And Squeak. Food rationing meant that leftovers were to be used to the fullest and as long as possible. People utilized the leftovers by throwing a lot of meals together, calling the dish bubble and squeak.
