TRADITIONAL BANANA SPLIT
There is some debate in our ice cream parlor what the "traditional" split consists of. I did some research before we opened and it seems that this is the most consistently "traditional" split served, even though some have marshmallow, peanuts, crushed cherries and more. I prefer hot fudge over the chocolate syrup, personally :P

- Top each scoop with some whipped cream and a cherry for each.

ALL-AMERICAN BANANA SPLIT
In 1904, the first banana split recipe was made here in Latrobe, Pennsylvania by David Strickler, an apprentice pharmacist at a local drug store. We still use his original formula when we make banana splits in our restaurants. -Melissa Blystone, Valley Dairy

BANANA SPLIT MUFFINS
Yum Banana Split in a muffin. I made adjustment to this recipe. The original recipe says to put the chocolate chip and pecans on top of the muffins before you bake them. I just felt it needed to be in the muffin. Then it states to add a cherry immediately after you remove it from the oven. I just couldn't see the cherry staying on top if I did that. So I've put it all inside the muffin. My only concern is that it may be to much chocolate so you may want to cut the chocolate chips down to 1/2 cup unless you are a serious chocolate lover. You can also leave out the pecans, if you like. But I hope you all enjoy!!

- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Wash the strawberries and dry thoroughly with a paper towel. Quarter each strawberry and place on a plate or tray lined with paper towels to absorb excess juice. Set aside.
- Using a knife, finely chop the walnuts into pieces. (Chopping them into smaller pieces releases their oil and also guarantees that you get walnut bits in every bite.) Set aside.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the butter, shortening, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla extract and banana extract, and beat on medium-low speed until mixed with just small chunks of butter remaining, approximately 30 seconds. (Every time you mix, scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula to be sure everything is combined.) Add half of the dry ingredient mixture and mix on low speed until just incorporated and no flour is visible, about 30 seconds. Repeat with half of the remaining dry ingredients, and mix on low speed until the flour is incorporated and all butter chunks are gone, approximately 20 seconds. Add the remaining dry ingredients and mix until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and is not sticky to the touch, about 20 seconds more. Be careful not to overmix. Stir in the chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and walnuts.
