APPLE CRISP

Apple Crisp image

This is the crisp my mom always made when I was growing up. We like it with vanilla ice cream on top--yummm! You can also make it with peaches instead of apples, although I'd suggest reducing or omitting the cinnamon and increasing the nutmeg when making peach crisp. I like to prepare it while dinner is cooking, then pop it in the oven to bake while we eat dinner. When dinner's over--voila! Hot apple or peach crisp, all ready to serve!

Provided by Halcyon Eve

Categories     Dessert

Time 50m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (or 1-2 quarts canned sliced peaches, drained)
1 cup flour
1/2-1 cup sugar (I always use 1/2 cup)
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1/3 cup melted butter, cooled to room temperature
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 pinch nutmeg
vanilla ice cream (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350* F. Coat an 8x12 inch glass baking dish with nonstick spray. Place sliced apples (or peach slices) in pan.
  • In a small bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and egg with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over apples.
  • Pour melted butter over flour mixture. Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on top.
  • Bake at 350* F for 30-40 minutes or until topping is cooked through and golden and apples are bubbling. Serve hot, with ice cream if desired.

APPLE CRISP

Apple Crisp image

This easy apple crisp recipe is hands-down the best I've ever tried. It tastes warm and cozy thanks to the baked cinnamon apples and brown sugar oatmeal crumble topping. Made with fresh apples and simple pantry ingredients - it's the perfect fall treat.

Provided by Fiona Dowling

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h5m

Number Of Ingredients 13

3/4 cup all-purpose flour
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup large flake oats
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter (, cut into cubes)
6 large apples (, I recommend Granny Smith)
3 tablespoons unsalted butter (, melted)
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons water
1/3 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350F degrees. Grease a 2-quart baking dish.
  • In a medium bowl stir together the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon & salt.
  • Add in the butter and cut it in using a pastry cutter or rub the butter into the dry ingredients using your fingers. At the end it should be crumbly in texture, but no large chunks of butter should remain. Place in the fridge as you make the filling.
  • Peel and slice the apples into thin slices about 1/8 - 1/4 inch thick.
  • Whisk together the melted butter, flour, water, sugar, cinnamon & nutmeg.
  • Pour the mixture over the sliced apples and toss to coat.
  • Spoon the apples into the greased pan, then crumble the oatmeal crumble overtop.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and you can see the apples bubbling around the edges of the pan.
  • Remove from the oven and cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST APPLE CRISP RECIPE

How to Make The BEST Apple Crisp Recipe image

This easy apple crisp recipe with it's brown sugar and oatmeal crumble streusel will take you right back to the best days of childhood.

Provided by Heidi

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 11

6 cups Granny Smith apples (green apples) (, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/4" slices (about 9-10 green apples))
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup melted butter

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with the sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoon flour, salt cinnamon, and nutmeg, and set aside for the sugar to soften the apples and macerate, creating a light syrup. In a smaller mixing bowl, toss the oats, 1 1/2 cups flour, brown sugar, and baking powder together, then use your fingers to mix in the melted butter, gently making small clumps where you can.
  • Layer the sugared apples and their juice in a 9 X 13 baking dish and sprinkle evenly with the oatmeal mixture, but don't pack it tightly. Bake uncovered for 50-60 minutes until the apples are soft and tender and the sauce has thickened and is bubbly. If the crisp seems to be browning too much, cover with foil for the remaining cooking time.
  • Let the apple crisp cool for 20-30 minutes before serving for the caramel sauce to thicken. Divide in bowls and top with vanilla ice cream or whip cream, and serve.
