DIRT CAKE

Dirt Cake image

Crushed chocolate cookies are the "dirt" in this no-bake dessert, while gummy worms on top add even more squeal-appeal. For the pudding layers, we folded in whipped sweetened cream cheese for flavor and loft. Be sure to assemble it in a glass dish so you can see the layers. The make-ahead cake is perfect for any potluck or BBQ-or a birthday bash.

Time 3h30m

Yield 8 to 10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

One 3.4-ounce package instant vanilla pudding
1 1/2 cups whole milk
50 chocolate sandwich cookies, such as Oreos (about 21.45 ounces)
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
Gummy worms, for decorating

Steps:

  • Combine the pudding mix and milk in a large bowl and whisk constantly until thickened, about 5 minutes. Refrigerate until firm, about 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, add the cookies to a food processor and process until fine crumbs form. Remove 4 cups and set aside. Drizzle the butter into the remaining crumbs and pulse until mixture starts to hold together when pinched between your fingers. Pour into a 2 1/2-quart glass bowl and pack with the bottom of a measuring cup to form an even layer. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Beat the cream cheese and confectioners' sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until no lumps remain, about 2 minutes. Beat the cream in a medium bowl with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form, about 2 minutes. Fold the whipped cream into the cream-cheese mixture until well combined, then fold this mixture into the pudding until well combined.
  • Pour half of the pudding mixture over the cookie crust and smooth with an offset spatula. Sprinkle with half of the reserved cookie crumbs, then top with the remaining pudding mixture and smooth with an offset spatula. Sprinkle with the remaining cookie crumbs, decorate with the gummy worms and refrigerate until well chilled, at least 3 hours and up to overnight. Serve cold.

Categories     dessert

Time 2h40m

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 5

Two 3-ounce packages strawberry gelatin dessert mix
One .25-ounce package unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 slice bread
1 box chocolate wafer cookies, for serving

Steps:

  • Put 3 cups water in a pan, bring to a boil and turn off the heat. Stir in the strawberry and unflavored gelatin until completely dissolved. Stir in the cream. Pour the hot liquid into a bowl and let stand until slightly thickened, 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, using a tall drinking glass wide enough to hold all the straws, cut out a circle from the slice of bread to fit in the bottom of the glass. Bundle the straws together with a rubber band and stand them up in the glass, pressing the bottom ends into the circle of bread.
  • Using a spouted measuring cup, pour the gelatin mixture into the tops of the straws. Refrigerate until chilled and set up completely, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  • Put the chocolate wafers in a resealable plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Arrange the crushed cookie on a plate or in a cleaned flower pot.
  • Use the back of a flat wooden spoon to push the gelatin out of the straws. Toss the jelly worms into the crushed cookies, leaving some to stick out.

GUILT-FREE DIRT & WORMS SURPRISE

Guilt-Free Dirt & Worms Surprise image

Dirt 'n Worms (or Worms 'n Dirt, as some call it) is a fun little dessert but mixing gloppy chocolate pudding and entire packages of Oreos with unnecessary amounts of gummy candy can rack up frightening nutritionals. The nutritional information is incorrect here, but this version from the Hungry Girl web site has only 163 calories, one gram of fat and three weight watchers points, and six grams of protein. You can also whip up a single-serving version of this recipe using a Jell-O Sugar Free Pudding Snack, a few gummy pieces, and a small handful of crushed Oreo Thin Crisps.

DO WORMS EAT DIRT? - ALL ABOUT WORMS
First, worms eat dirt, especially if they live deep inside of the earth. Worms that live closer to the surface have easier access to a variety of organic matter, so they are less likely to eat as much dirt as their burrowed buddies dwelling deep within the earth’s rich soil. Depending on the type of worm, all kinds of plants may be consumed. They eat leaves, dead grass, fruit, …
