WASHINGTON APPLE CAKE
Bake a gorgeous Washington Apple Cake that's worthy of a presidential dessert. It's got yellow cake mix, vanilla flavor instant pudding, cinnamon, a pound of apples and more. This moist Washington Apple Cake is served with sweet sour cream icing.

Steps:
- Heat oven to 350ºF.
- Beat first 6 ingredients and 1/2 cup sour cream in large bowl with mixer until blended. Stir in apples.
- Pour into greased and floured 10-inch tube pan or 12-cup fluted tube pan.
- Bake 1 hour to 1 hour 5 min. or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool cake in pan 15 min. Loosen cake from sides of pan with knife. Invert cake onto wire rack; gently remove pan. Cool cake completely.
- Whisk sugar, 1 tsp. water and remaining sour cream until blended; drizzle over cake. Let stand until glaze is firm.

- For the cake: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Mix together the softened butter with 2 tablespoons of the flour to make a paste. In a 10-inch Bundt pan, paint on the flour and butter paste with a pastry brush until the pan is well coated.
- Using an electric mixer, beat the sugar, oil and eggs until smooth. Add the orange juice and vanilla extract and mix well. In another bowl, sift together the baking soda, cinnamon, salt and remaining 3 cups flour. Add the flour mixture to the sugar mixture and continue to beat well. Stir in the apples and walnuts.
- Pour the batter into the pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out clean, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Turn the cake out onto a cake plate.
- For the glaze: Combine the sugar, butter, buttermilk and baking soda in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil the mixture until it thickens slightly and begins to turn a light brown, 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat.
- Using a toothpick, punch 15 to 20 holes in the top of the cake and pour the glaze over the cake. Let the cake set and cool before serving. Store the cake in an airtight cake carrier in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

- Spread apples in a butter 13"x9"x2" pan.
- Pour batter over apples, spreading to cover.
- Bake in a 350° oven for 1 hour.
- Remove from oven and let cool.
- Spread with cream cheese icing.

- Cream Cheese Icing: Beat softened cream cheese until fluffy.
- Beat in melted butter, then powdered sugar and lemon juice.
- Spread over cooled cake.

- Butter a 9x13" cake pan and set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat eggs at high speed until thick and light in color.
- Combine sugar and oil and beat into eggs.
- Stir together flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt.
- Add to egg mixture along with vanilla.
- Stir in nuts.
- Spread apple slices in bottom of buttered cake pan.
- Pour batter over apples, spreading to cover.
- Bake at 350 degrees 1 hour or until top is pale golden and apples are cooked.
- Remove from oven.
- Cool cake in pan on wire rack.
- When completely cool top with cream cheese icing.
- Cream Cheese Icing:.
- Beat cream cheese until fluffy.
- Beat in 1/4 c melted butter.
- Stir in 1-3/4 c confectioners sugar and 1 tsp lemon juice.
- Spread over cooled cake.

- In a large saucepan, combine apples, water and lemon juice; cook over medium-low heat just until apples are tender. Remove from the heat and cool (do not drain). , Preheat oven to 450°. In a large bowl, combine sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and salt; add apples and toss to coat. On a lightly floured surface, roll half of dough to a 1/8-in.-thick circle; transfer to a 9-in. pie plate. Trim even with rim. Add apple mixture. Roll remaining dough to a 1/8-in.-thick circle.
