10 cups water
2 tablespoons salt
1 tablespoon white sugar
2 ¼ pounds turnip greens, chopped
½ onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, pressed, or more to taste
¼ cup hot sauce

Steps:

  • Combine water, salt, and sugar in a stockpot; bring to a boil. Add turnip greens, onion, and garlic to the boiling water; cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Stir hot sauce into the mixture and cook until greens are tender, about 20 minutes more.

1 (14 ounce) can chicken broth
1 ½ cups water
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 pound turnip greens, chopped
½ teaspoon white sugar

Steps:

  • Bring chicken broth, water, oil, salt, and pepper to a boil in a stockpot. Add turnip greens and sugar and return to a boil; reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring every 15 minutes, until greens are tender, at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.

The secret to great tasting greens is salted pork called pepper jewl. Pepper jewl is the part of the pig around the neck and is salted and seasoned with pepper. You can find it in most urban neighborhood markets.

2 lbs turnip greens
1/4 lb salt pork (pepper jewl)
4 cups hot water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

Steps:

  • Place pepper jewl in a large pot and brown on both sides.
  • Remove cooked pepper jewl from pot and set aside for later.
  • Add 4 cups hot water, salt, pepper,crushed red pepper flakes,olive oil, sugar and red wine vinegar, and bring to a boil.
  • Add half the turnip greens, cover and cook for 10 minutes until greens have cooked down a little.
  • Add rest of greens. Stir well, cover and cook for 40 minutes over medium heat.
  • Stir two or three times while greens cook.
  • Add pepper jewel back to pot.

2-3/4 pounds turnips, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1 bunch fresh turnip greens (about 12 ounces), chopped
8 ounces cubed fully cooked country ham or 2 smoked ham hocks (about 1-1/2 pounds)
1 medium onion, chopped
3 tablespoons sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons coarsely ground pepper
1-1/4 teaspoons salt
2 cartons (32 ounces each) chicken broth

Steps:

  • In a greased 6- or 7-qt. slow cooker, combine all ingredients. Cook, covered, on low 5-6 hours or until vegetables are tender, stirring once. If using ham hocks, remove meat from bones when cool enough to handle; cut ham into small pieces and return to slow cooker. Serve with a slotted spoon.

2 lbs turnips (3 to 4 with roots)
4 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons bacon drippings

Steps:

  • Cut turnip leaves from turnip root. Wash turnip greens 3 times in cold water and cut off bit stem sections. Peel turnip root and cut into small cubes.
  • Place water in a large pot with lid and bring to a boil. Place turnip greens along with cubed roots into pot. Add salt and bacon drippings.
  • Boil on simmering heat for approximately one hour. Cut turnips greens into small pieces.
  • Serve and enjoy!
