"Our family first made this dessert after an outing to a cherry orchard," explains Mrs. Grossman of Brooklyn, New York. "We used the fresh fruit we picked to make several of these crisps."

Ingredients

4 cups pitted fresh tart cherries or 2 cans (14-1/2 ounces) pitted tart cherries, drained
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup cold butter, cubed

Steps:

Preheat oven to 375°. Place cherries in an ungreased 9-in. pie plate. Sprinkle with sugar. In a small bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over cherries. , Bake, uncovered, until top is bubbly, 30-40 minutes. Serve warm.

A tipple of ginger liqueur adds zip and complexity to this tart cherry riff on a margarita. To prep a batch for friends, add the ingredients to a jar the night before and refrigerate. When cocktail hour arrives you can simply add ice to the jar, stir, and strain the ruby red elixir into glasses.

Ingredients

1 1/2 ounces blanco tequila
1 ounce ginger liqueur, such as Domaine de Canton
2 ounces chilled unsweetened pure tart-cherry juice (we like Ocean Spray)
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
Luxardo cherry and a fresh ginger slice, for garnish

Steps:

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add tequila, ginger liqueur, cherry juice, and lime juice. Gently stir about 10 seconds. Strain into a chilled coupe glass; garnish with cherry and ginger slice. Serve immediately.
