My mother-in-law created this recipe, and we just can't get enough of her delectable sauce! I always keep a little out of the basting dish prior to using it on the grill so we have some to serve at the table. It tastes terrific on any grilled meat. -Mary Kaye Rackowitz, Marysville, Washington

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons prepared mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 to 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
1 bay leaf
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a small saucepan; bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30 minutes., Discard bay leaf. Use as a basting sauce when grilling chicken, pork or beef.

2 tablespoons butter or 2 tablespoons margarine
2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 cup catsup
1/2 cup celery, chopped
1 teaspoon dry mustard
salt
pepper

Steps:

  • Melt butter or margarine in skillet.
  • saute onions and celery until tender.
  • Add remaining ingredients and cook about 15 to 20 minutes until flavors blend.
  • Makes 1 1/2 cups of barbecue sauce.

1/3 cup olive oil
1 large yellow onion, chopped
1/2 cup dry red wine
1/3 cup cider vinegar
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar or 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon paprika
1 -2 teaspoon chili powder (or to your taste)
2 cups ketchup

Steps:

  • In a skillet, heat the oil over medium heat; cook the onion, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes or until softened.
  • Add in the wine and vinegar; bring to a boil, scraping up the browned bits sticking to the pan.
  • Transfer mixture to a slow cooker; stir in the remaining ingredients.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for 5-6 hours.
  • If the sauce is not thick enough for you, remove the lid, turn the cooker to HIGH, and cook up to 30 minutes until it reaches the desired consistency.
  • Puree with a handheld immersion blender or transfer to a food processor and process until smooth.
  • Let cool, then transfer to a jar, and stor, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
