This is our family's favorite applesauce. I found the recipe over 20 years ago when I was looking for something to make in the crock pot that I received as a wedding gift.

4 lbs tart apples, cored and sliced thin
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup water
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Steps:

  • Mix apples (about 12 cups) with cinnamon and sugar and put into crock pot.
  • Pour water and lemon juice over apples. Cook on low for 6 hours or high for 3 hours.

1 1/2 - 2 qt apples, your favorite, I used Gold Rush and Suncrisp (about 8 cups)
1 c water
1 tsp cinnamon, ground
1/4 tsp fresh grated nutmeg
1/3 c cane sugar
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

  • 1. Wash apples and core them. Then cut into 2" chunks.
  • 2. Place apples in the slow cooker. Add water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. I like my applesauce on the sweet-tart side so if you prefer a sweet sauce, increase sugar to 3/4 cup.
  • 3. Place lid on the slow cooker and set on high. Cook for two hours.
  • 4. After two hours, remove the lid and stir the apples. Replace lid and cook additional two hours. After four hours apples will be soft and "saucy".
  • 5. Fill ricer 2/3 full and process into a bowl.
  • 6. Remove skins from ricer and repeat until all apples have been riced. A food mill can also be used for this step in place of a ricer. Remove skins from the mill after each batch of apples has been processed. If you prefer to use an electric food processor, you must peel the apples in step one.
  • 7. After all apples have been riced or processed, stir in vanilla, mixing well. Refrigerate overnight, then transfer to freezer containers or freezer bags and freeze. Applesauce will be good for six months once frozen. Enjoy!

Steps:

  • Combine the apples and water in a slow cooker; cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours. Stir in the brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice; continue cooking another 30 minutes.
