1/2 C unsalted butter, room temp
1/2 C vegetable shortening
4 C sifted confectioners sugar
2 tbsp half and half
1 vanilla bean

Steps:

  • Slice the vanilla bean down the middle and then pull apart to open. Scrape the insides from the bean and set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer with the flat attachment, beat the butter and shortening until smooth and creamy. Beat in the vanilla bean. Gradually add the confectioners sugar and beat until well incorporated. The mixture will be very thick and dry. Beat in the half and half.
  • Store any unused frosting in a refrigerator for 3-5 days.

2 cups (4 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature, cut into small pieces
3 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
Pinch of salt
1 vanilla bean, scraped
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 cup milk

Steps:

  • In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter until creamy. Slowly add confectioners' sugar; beat to combine, scraping down sides of bowl as necessary.
  • Add vanilla bean seeds and vanilla extract, and beat to combine. Slowly add milk and continue beating on medium-low speed until smooth and creamy, about 5 minutes.

This is such an easy and delicious Vanilla Bean Buttercream Frosting recipe!

Number Of Ingredients 5

3 sticks (354g) unsalted butter
9 cups (1035g) powdered sugar
3 teaspoons (12 g) vanilla bean paste (adjust amount to your liking)
1/2 to 1 teaspoon salt (optional to cut sweetness)
1/4 cup (60g) milk (adjust based on desired consistency)

Steps:

  • Cream the softened butter until smooth. Blend in the vanilla.
  • Add half of the powdered sugar and most of the milk. Beat at medium speed until the powdered sugar is incorporated.
  • Add remaining powdered sugar and milk and mix at medium speed another 3 to 4 minutes scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally. I slow down the mixer to very slow. (#2 on the Kitchenaid) for 1 to 2 minutes. This will help eliminate air pockets in the buttercream. The texture will become very smooth.
  • Makes approximately 6 cups of frosting.

6 ounces unsalted butter, room temperature
2 ounces shortening
1 whole egg, room temperature
1 pound confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Place the butter and shortening into the bowl of a stand mixer and, using the paddle attachment, cream the butter on high until light and fluffy, approximately 3 to 4 minutes. Add the egg and beat until well combined, approximately 1 minute. Turn off the mixer and add 1/2 cup of the sugar. Mix on low until combined. Stop to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Repeat until all of the sugar has been incorporated. Add the vanilla and continue to beat until the frosting is smooth and light, approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Use immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 hours or refrigerate for up to a week. Bring to room temperature before using.

Steps:

  • Place the butter in a large mixing bowl.
  • Add in 4 cups sugar, then the milk and vanilla.
  • On medium speed of an electric mixer, beat about 3-5 minutes or until smooth and creamy.
  • Gradually add the remaining sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well (about 2 minutes) after each addition, until the icing is thick enough for good spreading consistency (you may not need all of the sugar).
  • If desired, add a few drops of food coloring and mix thoroughly.
  • Use and store the icing at room temperature because icing will set if chilled.
  • The icing can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • **If making a 3-layer cake, use the following proportions: 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, 8-10 cups confectioner's sugar, 3/4 cup milk, and 1 tablespoon vanilla extract.

4 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
5 -6 tablespoons 2% low-fat milk

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the confectioners' sugar, vanilla and enough milk to achieve desired consistency.
  • Almond Buttercream Frosting : Substitute 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon almond extract for the vanilla.
  • Chocolate Buttercream Frosting : Reduce confectioners' sugar to 4 cups and add 1/2 cup baking cocoa; increase milk to 6-7 tablespoons.
