The Best Saucy Baked Beans image

Provided by Mel

Time 1h50m

Number Of Ingredients 14

6 slices bacon (regular or thick cut), diced
1 cup small diced onion
2 cans (15-ounces each) pinto beans
2 cans (15-ounces each) navy beans
3/4 cup ketchup
1/3 cup brown sugar (see note)
1/4 cup molasses
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon dijon or yellow mustard
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon and onion until the bacon is cooked through and starting to crisp and the onions are translucent, 5-7 minutes. Drain excess grease.
  • Rinse and drain only two cans of the beans. Add the rinsed and drained beans to the skillet along with the two cans of undrained beans.
  • Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  • Oven Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Transfer the baked beans to an oven-safe 9X13-inch dish and cover with foil. Bake for 1 hour. Uncover and bake for 15-20 more minutes until bubbling. Remove from the oven and let sit for 15 minutes. They'll thicken up more as they cool slightly. Season to taste with additional salt and pepper, if needed.
  • Slow Cooker Directions: Tansfer the beans to the insert of a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours until bubbling and slightly thickened. They'll thicken up more as they cool slightly. Season to taste with additional salt and pepper, if needed.

SAVORY BAKED BEANS

Savory Baked Beans image

Here's a great recipe for baked beans! Simple to cook, goes with many other recipes, and it's big on taste. I haven't done so, but I'm sure it would work in the crock pot. This is great for pot-lucks. This goes great with coleslaw and some roasted corn on the cob.

SAUCY BAKED BEANS

Saucy Baked Beans image

Basically traditional Boston baked beans, but uses bacon rather than salt pork, and orange peel and raisins add a zippy surprise. The preparation time doesn't include pre-soaking the beans overnight. I like to serve this with Boston Brown bread (see my recipe #90592), as is customary.

Provided by echo echo

Categories     Pork

Time 6h10m

Yield 12-14 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 cups dried pinto beans (1 1/2 lb) or 4 cups great northern beans (1 1/2 lb)
1/2 lb bacon, diced
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup maple sugar or 1 cup maple syrup
1 cup dark molasses
1 cup dark brown sugar
1 cup raisins
2 tablespoons dry mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon orange zest

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cover the beans with water to 2 inches above the top of the beans; soak overnight and drain.
  • Sautè the bacon with the onion until the bacon is crisp and the onion is tender.
  • Add the bacon and onion and any pan juices to the beans.
  • Combine the bean mixture with 10 cups water plus the maple sugar through the orange peel.

Categories     Side Dish     Beans and Peas     Baked Bean Recipes

Time 3h15m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 21

3 smoked ham hocks, or more to taste
1 large onion, diced
1 stalk celery, chopped
2 large bay leaves
1 tablespoon minced garlic, or to taste
1 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring
1 teaspoon dried basil
½ teaspoon ground thyme
½ teaspoon dried rubbed sage
salt and ground black pepper to taste
3 cups dried pinto beans, sorted and rinsed
1 (12 ounce) package bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 large onion, diced small
1 (15.5 ounce) can crushed pineapple
¾ cup brown sugar, or less to taste
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon steak sauce (such as A1®)
1 tablespoon good steak sauce
1 ½ teaspoons minced garlic, or to taste
1 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Fill a large pot 3/4 full with water. Use a sharp knife to cut 3 or 4 slits evenly spaced through skin on ham hocks. Add ham hocks, onion, celery, bay leaves, garlic, liquid smoke, basil, thyme, sage, salt, and pepper to the water and bring to a good boil for 1 hour.
  • Add beans to the pot. Return to a boil and cook gently until beans are tender, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Check liquid level often and add more water if necessary.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Place bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain bacon on paper towels. Transfer bacon to a large bowl and add onion.
  • Use a slotted spoon to dip beans and ham hocks out of the water and into a 9x13-inch baking pan. Reserve liquid from the beans. Clean all meat off of the ham hocks, discard bones, and add meat to the bowl with the bacon and onions.
  • Mix in pineapple, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir in steak sauce, good steak sauce, and garlic. Add liquid smoke, salt, and black pepper; mix until completely incorporated. Fold in bacon mixture. Adjust seasonings if necessary. Pour bean mixture into the baking pan and add some reserved bean liquid over beans if necessary.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until beans are hot and bubbly all around the edges, about 30 minutes.
