BREAKFAST SAUSAGE BREAD

Breakfast Sausage Bread image

Any time we take this savory, satisfying bread to a potluck, it goes over very well. We never bring any home. My husband generally makes this bread and prides himself on the beautiful golden loaves. -Shirley Caldwell, Northwood, Ohio

SAUSAGE CHEESE BREAD ROLL RECIPE - (4.5/5)

Sausage Cheese Bread Roll Recipe - (4.5/5) image

Provided by Pattywak

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 loaf frozen bread dough, thawed
1 breakfast sausage (Jimmy Dean Sage is our favorite)
8 to 10 ounces cheese, shredded (we typically use cheddar, but anything is good)
2 eggs (raw, used as a binder for other ingredients)

Steps:

  • Roll dough into approximately 12 x 15-inch rectangle. Cook the sausage and mix it with the eggs and shredded cheese. Spread the mixture on top of the bread dough. Roll up the dough like a jelly roll and place into a greased or Spam sprayed bundt pan. Let rise in a warm area until it gets puffy (about an hour). Cook on platesetter (feet down) at about 375°F dome temperature. Place bundt pan on platesetter and cook until top is golden brown (usually about 35 to 45 minutes). Invert bundt pan onto cutting surface and then brush butter on all sides of bread roll. Slice and enjoy. Cook's note: We quite often do the preparation and assembly the night before and leave in the bundt pan in the fridge, covered with a wet towel to keep dough from drying. The next morning take the bundt pan out of the fridge before starting. By the time the oven is ready and stabilized the dough has warmed up and risen some.

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 55m

Yield 2 large sausage rolls

Number Of Ingredients 17

1 1/2 lbs lean pork sausage
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
3 tablespoons dry red wine (optional)
3 eggs, beaten
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh basil
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon ground sage
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 cups grated mozzarella cheese
1 cup grated parmesan cheese
2 dashes Tabasco sauce, to taste (optional)
2 (1 lb) packages pizza dough (available in refrigerator cases of grocery stores)
1/4 cup flour (for working with the dough)
2 cups assorted mustard (whole grain, sweet and hot, jalapeno, etc)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  • In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown the sausage in small pieces together with the chopped onion (and the mushrooms and red wine, if using) in a skillet until completely brown and cooked through.
  • Remove meat and onion from the pan with a slotted spoon and let drain on a plate covered with paper towel. Make sure it's drained well! (You can also put it in a colander and rinse it with hot water to get even more drippings removed from the cooked meat, it you like.).
  • When cooled and drained well, place the sausage and onion in a bowl and mix with the eggs, basil, allspice, garlic powder, sage, salt, pepper, mozzarella, and Parmesan (and Tabasco, if using); stir together well.
  • On a lightly floured board, set one pound of the pizza dough; sprinkle the top of the dough lightly with flour and roll it out 1/2-inch thick into an approximate 10x12-inch rectangle.
  • Leaving a 1 1/2 inch border on the sides of the rectangle, spread half the sausage mixture over the dough.
  • Fold in the border of dough and, starting at a narrow end, roll the dough in a"jelly roll" fashion.
  • Place the roll seam-side down on a baking sheet; make the second sausage roll with remaining ingredients and place it on the baking sheet.
  • Bake the rolls for 40-45 minutes at 375 degrees until they are crusty and brown; let cool for about five minutes on a wire rack before serving.
  • Serve warm on cutting boards, with a knife for cutting and an assortment of good mustards.

ITALIAN SAUSAGE BREAD

Italian Sausage Bread image

This is an appetizer that my husband's Italian grandmother used to make when he was a kid. When we married, he made it for my family at the holidays and now it's our most requested dish. It's so easy and everyone will think you slaved over it. This recipe makes two loaves, and trust me, you'll want to make both. Grandma Tallini makes her own bread dough of course, and you can too, but I find pizza dough from the local pizzeria or from the supermarket deli works just as good and saves me a lot of time. Same thing goes for the marinara.

Provided by Faux Chef Lael

Categories     Breads

Time 1h10m

Yield 2 loaves, 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 lb ground sweet Italian sausage (links are fine, just take them out of the casings)
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
1/4 cup salted butter
1 teaspoon dried parsley
2 medium onions, coarsely chopped (white or yellow)
salt and pepper
4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
2 pizza dough, balls
1 egg white
2 cups marinara sauce (for dipping)

Steps:

  • Line a cookie sheet with non-stick foil, set aside.
  • Melt butter in a large skillet, add onions, salt, pepper and parsley. Cook onions until they are translucent, then add the garlic. Cook the onions until they are carmelized.
  • Remove the onions to a bowl, leaving the extra butter in the pan.
  • Put the sausage into pan and chop it into bite sized chunks. Cook the sausage until it is browned.
  • Add the onions back to the pan with the sausage and cover with a lid. Simmer on low heat for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. DO NOT let it burn.
  • Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350.
  • Flour a surface and roll out one dough ball with a rolling pin until it is the size of a large pizza. Try not to let it get any thin spots or holes.
  • When the sausage mixture is finished, use a slotted spoon to scoop half of it onto the dough and spread it evenly over the surface. You will save the other half for the second dough. Cover with a layer of half the shredded mozzarella.
  • Roll the dough up like a cinnamon roll, but tuck in the ends like a burrito before you get to the end of the roll.
  • Lay it with the flap down on the cookie sheet and brush with the egg white.
  • Bake in the oven until golden brown, approximately 25-30 minutes. After baking, let the bread rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
  • Repeat process for second loaf.
  • Slice and serve with marinara sauce for dipping.
